Diagnosis, prevalence, and mortality of sarcopenia in dialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Xiaoyu Shu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus on the prevalence and impact of sarcopenia in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis. This review aimed to summarize the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and impact of sarcopenia on mortality in these patients. The results showed that sarcopenia is highly prevalent in dialysis patients and is associated with increased mortality risk. Standardization of diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia is necessary, and further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate its prevalence and prognostic value in dialysis patients.

Sarcopenia in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Scoping Review of Prevalence, Risk Factors, Association with Outcomes, and Treatment

Varvara Chatzipetrou et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia in individuals with chronic kidney disease presents with varying prevalence rates and is associated with multiple risk factors and adverse outcomes. Current research on treatment for sarcopenic CKD individuals is limited, with a focus on interventions such as aerobic and resistance exercises along with nutritional interventions. The effectiveness of these interventions in treating sarcopenia and preventing clinical consequences in this population still requires further investigation.

Summary: Sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes in CKD patients, including mortality, hospitalization, and ESKD progression. Low muscle strength, low muscle mass, and low physical performance are specifically related to increased mortality risk in CKD patients.

Sarcopenia, sarcopenic overweight/obesity and risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrhythmia: A cross-sectional study

Ming-Feng Xia et al.

Summary: The study revealed a strong association between sarcopenia and cardiovascular diseases as well as cardiac arrhythmias in middle-aged and elderly adults, even without clinical heart failure. Sarcopenia was found to be independently associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and atrial fibrillation, especially in overweight/obese individuals.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease face an increased risk of cardiovascular events, with advanced CKD stages significantly elevating the risk. Cardiovascular events, rather than end-stage kidney disease, are the leading cause of death in this high-risk population, and CKD causes a proinflammatory state that affects the cardiovascular system.
