Universal newborn screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection: feasibility and relevance in a French type-III maternity cohort

Summary: This study evaluated the relevance and feasibility of universal neonatal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMVI) in saliva. Results showed that among the tested neonates, 63 had cCMVI, with 50% of cases being non-primary infections in mothers. The ROC curve analysis demonstrated good performance of saliva PCR. The screening was highly accepted by staff members and no parent refused it. The study suggests that in 62% of cCMVI cases, infection can only be detected through universal neonatal screening in saliva.

Cranial ultrasound and MRI: complementary or not in the diagnostic assessment of children with congenital CMV infection?

In some children with normal cranial ultrasound, abnormalities were still detected on MRI, highlighting the importance of utilizing both imaging techniques for a comprehensive diagnosis.
