Universal newborn screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection: feasibility and relevance in a French type-III maternity cohort

E. Letamendia-Richard et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relevance and feasibility of universal neonatal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMVI) in saliva. Results showed that among the tested neonates, 63 had cCMVI, with 50% of cases being non-primary infections in mothers. The ROC curve analysis demonstrated good performance of saliva PCR. The screening was highly accepted by staff members and no parent refused it. The study suggests that in 62% of cCMVI cases, infection can only be detected through universal neonatal screening in saliva.

Cranial ultrasound and MRI: complementary or not in the diagnostic assessment of children with congenital CMV infection?

Annelies Keymeulen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that cranial ultrasound and cerebral magnetic resonance imaging are complementary in assessing central nervous system involvement in children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection. It is indicated that both imaging techniques should be included in the assessment, as they compensate for each other's strengths and weaknesses. In some children with normal cranial ultrasound, abnormalities were still detected on MRI, highlighting the importance of utilizing both imaging techniques for a comprehensive diagnosis.

Audiovestibular Consequences of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: Greater Vulnerability of the Vestibular Part of the Inner Ear

Emilien Chebib et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of congenital cytomegalovirus infection on cochlear and vestibular function. The results showed that the vestibular part is more often impaired than the cochlear part, emphasizing the importance of evaluating both vestibular and auditory function in children infected with cytomegalovirus.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to assess the predictive factors of both hearing and vestibular impairment in congenitally cytomegalovirus-infected children (cCMV). The study found that antenatal imaging brain damage and early infection were the two best independent predictive factors of inner ear involvement.

Summary: The study tested the feasibility of using saliva pools for screening of congenital HCMV infection in two Portuguese hospitals, revealing a prevalence rate of 0.67%. The use of saliva pools was effective for timely screening and confirmation, leading to cost reduction.

Sensitivity of Dried Blood Spot Testing for Detection of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection

Sheila C. Dollard et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates relatively high analytical sensitivity for DBS compared with previous studies that performed population-based screening. As more sensitive DNA extraction and PCR methods continue to emerge, DBS-based testing should remain under investigation as a potential low-cost, high-throughput option for cCMV screening.

Clinical outcome and the role of antivirals in congenital cytomegalovirus infection

Shannon A. Ross et al.

Summary: cCMV infection is a major cause of hearing loss and neurological disabilities in children globally. Most infants with cCMV are asymptomatic at birth, but 10-15% will develop hearing loss. Diagnosis relies on detecting the virus from urine or saliva within the first three weeks of life, with saliva PCR being the preferred method. Prevention strategies are limited, and antiviral therapy is standard for infants with symptomatic cCMV.

Summary: This study synthesized the evidence on the association between congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and permanent childhood hearing loss. Results showed that congenital CMV infection is an important risk factor for hearing loss in children and should be considered in screening and follow-up programs.

Summary: The study investigated the incidence of cCMV in the French departments of Mayotte and La Reunion in the Indian Ocean, and implemented universal screening at birth. Results showed a higher cCMV incidence than in metropolitan France, but the screening was well accepted by parents and deemed feasible.
