Hospital Frailty Risk Score predicts adverse events in older patients with hip fractures after surgery: Analysis of a nationwide inpatient database in Japan

Akio Shimizu et al.

Summary: This study found an association between frailty risk in patients with hip fractures and in-hospital mortality, complications, and functional outcomes. Patients with low frailty risk were more common, while those with high risk were less common. This suggests that the Hospital Frailty Risk Score can predict adverse events in older Japanese patients with hip fractures.

Hospital Frailty Risk Score predicts adverse events in older patients with vertebral compression fractures: Analysis of data in a nationwide in-patient database in Japan

Akio Shimizu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the usefulness of frailty in predicting adverse events in patients with vertebral compression fractures during hospitalization. The findings showed that a higher frailty risk was associated with increased in-hospital mortality and occurrence of complications. The Hospital Frailty Risk Score was found to be predictive of adverse events in older VCF patients.

Assessment of coding-based frailty algorithms for long-term outcome prediction among older people in community settings: a cohort study from the Shizuoka Kokuho Database

Shiori Nishimura et al.

Summary: This study assessed the applicability of the Electronic Frailty Index (eFI) and Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) algorithms to Japanese administrative claims data. The study found that these algorithms could effectively assess long-term mortality and long-term care needs of plan enrollees.

Hospital Frailty Risk Score Predicts Outcomes in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbations

Kenta Ushida et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between frailty risk and functional outcomes in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study found that patients with a higher frailty risk had worse outcomes in terms of prolonged hospitalization, in-hospital mortality, poor activities of daily living, and difficulty in returning home.

Predictive Validity of Body Mass Index Cutoff Values Used in the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition Criteria for Discriminating Severe and Moderate Malnutrition Based on In-Patients With Pneumonia in Asians

Akio Shimizu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the predictive validity of BMI cutoff values of the GLIM criteria for pneumonia patients in Asians aged 65 and above. Results suggested that the BMI cutoff values may be valid for patients aged 70 and above, further research is needed to validate the cutoff value for older adults aged below 70 years.

Frailty and comorbidity in predicting community COVID-19 mortality in the UK Biobank: The effect of sampling

Jonathan K. L. Mak et al.

Summary: Frailty and comorbidity measures were found to be associated with COVID-19 mortality risk in a U.K. Biobank cohort study. Concurrent HFRS and CCI were shown to have stronger predictive abilities for COVID-19 mortality, but limited added value in COVID-19 inpatients.

Frailty and hospitalization-associated disability after pneumonia: A prospective cohort study

Chan Mi Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the 30-day clinical course and functional outcomes of pneumonia in older adults with different levels of frailty. It found that older adults with higher frailty levels had a higher risk of death or functional decline in 30 days, and were more likely to require nasogastric tube feeding, prolonged hospitalization, and discharge to a long-term care institution. The study highlights the importance of frailty assessment in the acute care setting.
