Discrete space-based route planning for rotary-wing UAV formation in urban environments

Yu Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the route planning problem for rotary-wing UAV formation in discrete urban environments is addressed. A discrete-space consensus algorithm (DSCA) and an improved rapidly-exploring random tree (IRRT) algorithm were developed to achieve formation convergence and obstacle avoidance. Time information of waypoints was complemented to reduce the time gap of reaching destinations by resolving conflicts among multiple rotary-wing UAVs.

Safety from Fast, In-the-Loop Reachability with Application to UAVs

Christian Llanes et al.

Summary: This article presents a runtime assurance mechanism for ensuring the safety of a controlled dynamical system and its application to collision avoidance of two unmanned aerial vehicles. The mechanism computes the reachable set of the system under a backup control law and utilizes control barrier functions to filter the primary controller when necessary. The proposed mechanism has been successfully demonstrated in a dual multirotor UAV case study.

Conflict-free four-dimensional path planning for urban air mobility considering airspace occupancy

Wei Dai et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the conflict-free path planning problem for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations with consideration of four-dimensional airspace management, proposing a Conflict-Free A* (CFA*) algorithm based on a first-come-first-served scheme. Numerical simulations show that the algorithm can efficiently generate paths resolving potential conflicts, providing important reference for UAM development.

Trajectory-based flight scheduling for AirMetro in urban environments by conflict resolution

Yu Wu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the flight scheduling problem for AirMetro, a new concept proposed for future 3D public air transportation service, with solutions including a pipeline-based route planning algorithm for gridded urban environments, a minimum influence-based approach to resolve conflicts among UAVs, and a modified simulated annealing algorithm to optimize UAV sequence for conflict resolution. Results show that the trajectory-based flight scheduling method can improve flight efficiency and safety of UAVs in AirMetro.

Integrated Network Design and Demand Forecast for On-Demand Urban Air Mobility

Zhiqiang Wu et al.

Summary: Urban air mobility (UAM) is a new concept that aims to provide an alternative way of transporting passengers and goods in urban areas using low-altitude airspace. This study uses integer programming and a solution algorithm to determine the optimal locations of vertiports and user allocation, considering interactions between vertiport locations and potential UAM demand. The findings offer insights for municipal decision-makers and UAM operators on network design and pricing strategies to enhance the efficiency and revenue generation of UAM services.

An Adaptive Path Replanning Method for Coordinated Operations of Drone in Dynamic Urban Environments

Yu Wu et al.

Summary: In this article, an adaptive path replanning (APReP) method is proposed for drones to respond to various dynamic changes in urban environments. Three strategies are developed for single-drone operation, and planning orders for multiple drones are determined by task priority, path planning strategy, and competition mechanism. The discrete rapidly exploring random tree (DRRT) algorithm is presented to generate the path in discrete urban environments, showing that the APReP algorithm is efficient in large-scale problems with multiple dynamic changes.

Tight Decomposition Functions for Continuous-Time Mixed-Monotone Systems With Disturbances

Matthew Abate et al.

Summary: The letter demonstrates that any continuous-time dynamical system with a Lipschitz continuous vector field is mixed-monotone, and presents a method for constructing a decomposition function that yields the tightest approximation of reachable sets. Additionally, efficient computation of under-approximations of reachable sets via the mixed-monotonicity property by considering the backward-time dynamics is shown.
