Enhanced adsorption of metal ions onto Vetiveria zizanioides biochar via batch and fixed bed studies

Uplabdhi Tyagi

Summary: The study highlights the potential of Vetiveria Zizanioides derived biochar for heavy metal removal in multicomponent systems. Biochar efficiency varies with pH, metal ion concentration and residence time. Fixed-bed column testing showed that multicomponent sequence provides more protection against premature exhaustion of biochar.

Physicochemical Characterization of Cherry Pits-Derived Biochar

Vladimir Fristak et al.

Summary: This study physicochemically characterized cherry pit biochar (CPB) and evaluated its sorption efficiency in the separation of Hg2+ and AsO43- from aqueous solutions. The results showed that CPB had a higher sorption efficiency for Hg2+ than for AsO43-. This research is valuable for the future application and development of biochar.

Alemu Gizaw et al.

Summary: This study used Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) synthesized from Alum Factory solid waste residue to remove nitrate and phosphate simultaneously. The Thomas and BDST models were shown to be suitable for predicting the breakthrough curve parameters for both nitrate and phosphate. The competitive nature of nitrate and phosphate adsorption was confirmed.

Ammonium removal from groundwater using peanut shell based modified biochar: Mechanism analysis and column experiments

Qiang An et al.

Summary: This study found that the modified biochar (MBC) demonstrated better adsorption capacity for ammonium compared to unmodified biochar (BC), with a maximum capacity of 6.92 mg/g. The adsorption rate was mainly controlled by monolayers chemisorption. Column experiments also confirmed the removal performance of MBC, showing its potential as an effective adsorbent for removing ammonium from groundwater.

Characteristics and quantification of mechanisms of Cd2+ adsorption by biochars derived from three different plant-based biomass

Weijie Dai et al.

Summary: The physicochemical properties of rice straw, eucalyptus leaves, and vetiver grass biochars pyrolyzed at 400 degrees C were investigated. It was found that rice straw biochar may possess more acidic functional groups and vetiver grass biochar had the largest specific surface area. Cd2+ adsorption by the biochars was dominated by chemical reaction rather than physical interaction. SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses revealed precipitation, ion exchange, complexation, and cation pi interaction occurring in all the biochars, with precipitation, ion exchange, and cation pi interaction being the main mechanisms contributing to total adsorption capacity.

Comparison of characteristics, water quality and health risk assessment of trace elements in surface water and groundwater in China

Shuangmei Tong et al.

Summary: The study compared the pollution status of surface water and groundwater in China for the first time, finding higher levels of trace elements, with arsenic being the predominant pollutant causing non-carcinogenic risk to human health. Children were more vulnerable to the adverse effects. High-risk sites were identified in specific river basins and regions, calling for more extensive monitoring in the future.

The potential of date palm waste biochar for single and simultaneous removal of ammonium and phosphate from aqueous solutions

Yohanna Haile Fseha et al.

Summary: The study found that date palm waste biochar has high removal and adsorption capacities for NH4+ and PO43- ions in water, with experimental data under different solution conditions fitting well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model. Increasing the depth of biochar bed and decreasing the initial flow rate both enhanced the removal efficiencies and dynamic adsorption capacities of NH4+ and PO43-.

The effect of pyrolysis temperature and feedstock on date palm waste derived biochar to remove single and multi-metals in aqueous solutions

Banu Sizirici et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar derived from date palm leaf and frond waste showed high efficiency and sorption capacity in removing single and mixed metals from water. Different feedstock and pyrolysis temperatures did not significantly affect the metal removal efficiency of biochar, indicating that producing biochar at lower temperatures could be a sustainable and cost-effective option without compromising its effectiveness in metal removal.
