Cellular compartments challenged by membrane photo-oxidation

Tayana Mazin Tsubone et al.

Summary: The lipid composition plays a crucial role in the structure and function of cellular and organelle membranes, impacting membrane proteins and various biochemical events. Photochemical reactions in biological membranes, while essential for processes like photosynthesis, can also lead to cell damage and disease, but may also be harnessed for therapeutic purposes in Photodynamic Therapy.

In vitro Effect of Harmine Alkaloid and Its N-Methyl Derivatives Against Toxoplasma gondii

Maria L. Alomar et al.

Summary: Toxoplasmosis is a prevalent zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Current pharmacological treatments have limitations, so the search for new drugs is urgent. Beta-carboline alkaloids show potential as alternative treatments, with harmine, 2-methyl-harminium, and 9-methyl-harmine demonstrating anti-T. gondii activity in vitro. The compounds affect parasite invasion, replication, and cell cycle progression, with 9-methyl-harmine showing the highest growth inhibition of tachyzoites.
