Evaluation of orange and potato peels as an energy source: a comprehensive study on their pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics

Korkut Acikalin

Summary: The study found that orange peels decompose in four stages, while potato peels decompose in three stages, with the second and third stages of orange peel pyrolysis and the second stage of potato peel pyrolysis identified as active pyrolysis stages. Calculated kinetic parameters showed that orange and potato peels could be valuable as sustainable energy sources in pyrolysis processes.

Walnut shell based adsorbents: A review study on preparation, mechanism, and application

Hania Albatrni et al.

Summary: Agricultural-based adsorbents have gained attention in the water treatment industry, particularly in adsorption. They are seen as the next generation adsorbents due to their unique properties and affinity towards various constituents. Walnut shells, among other agricultural wastes, show great potential as activated carbon precursors. This review assesses walnut shell-based adsorbents in terms of their activation methods, preparation, resulting characteristics, and factors influencing adsorption capacity. The review also discusses different activation methods, mechanisms, and factors controlling adsorption behaviors, as well as adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Future research needs and challenges are also mentioned.

Recent advances in removal of Congo Red dye by adsorption using an industrial waste

Maria Harja et al.

Summary: This study successfully removed Congo Red dye from simulated textile wastewater using fly ash from a local power plant, and comprehensively characterized the fly ash. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the dye depended on various factors, including contact time, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperature. The removal process was found to be a chemical adsorption, as indicated by the fit to pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The Langmuir model provided a good fit to the experimental data, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 22.12 mg/g. This preliminary case study highlights the great potential of fly ash as a material for Congo Red dye removal.

Synergistic action of laccase treatment and membrane filtration during removal of azo dyes in an enzymatic membrane reactor upgraded with electrospun fibers

Katarzyna Jankowska et al.

Summary: Nowadays, the increasing amounts of dyes in wastewater and water bodies have become a global problem. Researchers have developed new biosystems using nanofiltration or ultrafiltration membranes combined with laccase to decolorize aqueous solutions of azo dyes. The experiment showed that under the conditions of pH 5 and pressure of 2 bar, high decolorization efficiencies of 97% and 100% were achieved.

Valorization of pomegranate peel balls as bioadsorbents of methylene blue in aqueous media

Radhia Msaadi et al.

Summary: Pomegranate peel balls were evaluated as bioadsorbents for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. The adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics and the maximum adsorption capacity varied with temperature, with physical adsorption being the primary mechanism. The waste generated by pomegranate peel could be considered for future water filtration and environmental protection in countries where pomegranates are available.

Effect of pyridine as advanced polymeric inhibitor for pure copper: adsorption and corrosion mechanisms

Wafa Sassi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the corrosion inhibition effect of pyridine on copper in a 3 wt% NaCl solution, finding that the inhibitor acts as a mixed-type inhibitor with more significant effect on the anodic domain. The inhibition efficiency of Pyr increases with higher inhibitor content. Surface characterization showed that Pyr has large negative charge in nitrogen and oxygen atoms, resulting in chemisorption onto the copper surface with a significant 97% inhibition efficiency.

Modelization and implementation of free adsorption and electrosorption of Cr (VI) from wastewater using Al2O3 nanoparticles: assessment and comparison of the two processes

Wafa Sassi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to enhance the adsorption capacity of nanoparticles, shorten the purification time and cost of contaminated waters using electrosorption technique. Results showed that adsorption of Cr (VI) on nano-Al2O3 occurred on a homogenous surface, and electrosorption process had a higher adsorption yield compared to free adsorption. However, the electrosorption process caused the loss of crystallinity in Al2O3 nanoparticles.

Prediction and optimization of electroplated Ni-based coating composition and thickness using central composite design and artificial neural network

Wafa Sassi et al.

Summary: The study used an artificial neural network and central composite design model to determine the optimal electroplating conditions for Ni-based alloys, including current density, pH, and temperature. The theoretically optimal conditions were found to be 42 mA cm(-2) current density, pH 4.5, and 50 degrees Celsius. XPS and XRD analyses showed that these conditions would result in homogeneous and compact alloy structures, as well as stable Ni-alloy crystallinity.
