If you don't have a word for something, you may doubt whether it's even real - how individuals with borderline personality disorder experience change

Maaria Koivisto et al.

Summary: This study investigated how individuals with borderline personality disorder experienced psychological change and identified treatment factors that were perceived as helpful or hindering. Qualitative analysis revealed that improved mental event observation, decreased disconnection from emotions, and emergence of new adaptive emotional reactions were key changes experienced. Factors such as learning and normalization were perceived as helpful, while aggression and inflexibility were seen as obstacles. Long-term psychoeducational group therapy appeared to enhance mentalization and promote self-integration in BPD patients.

Corinna Reichl et al.

Summary: This article provides a selective overview of recent studies on the relationship between nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The findings suggest that NSSI, particularly, can serve as an accessible marker for early detection of BPD risk. Additionally, the review highlights the role of affective instability in maintaining NSSI and increasing the risk of suicidal behavior among individuals with BPD, as well as the effectiveness of treatment programs in reducing self-harming behavior.
