The effect of mannitol addition to hydration on acute kidney injury event after high dose cisplatin chemotherapy: an ambispective cohort study

Andhika Rachman et al.

Summary: This study compared the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in cancer patients receiving high dose cisplatin with and without the addition of mannitol. The results showed that adding mannitol to hydration did not reduce the risk of cisplatin-induced AKI compared to saline hydration alone. It was also found that the risk for AKI was higher in patients aged 40 and above.

Natural products: potential treatments for cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity

Chun-yan Fang et al.

Summary: Cisplatin is a clinically advanced anticancer drug, but its severe nephrotoxic effects limit its clinical use. There are currently no effective drugs for cisplatin-induced kidney injury, but natural products may have potential therapeutic effects.

Protective Effect of Mannitol on Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Songtao Li et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that mannitol is effective in reducing cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity events, especially Grade 3 events. However, it may cause more nausea/vomiting events and worsen renal function in patients with diabetes or hypertension. Additionally, mannitol may have a better effect on gastrointestinal and urinary tract cancers.

Mechanisms of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury: Pathological Mechanisms, Pharmacological Interventions, and Genetic Mitigations

Kristen Renee McSweeney et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the characteristics of nephrotoxicity in cisplatin treatment, the pathophysiological mechanisms of kidney injury, and the current research on pharmacological treatment options to reduce AKI. Despite years of research, interventions, and clinical trials, there is still a lack of consistent pharmacological treatment options for cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury.

Potential Therapeutic Targets for Cisplatin-Induced Kidney Injury: Lessons from Other Models of AKI and Fibrosis

Sophia M. Sears et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of cisplatin, a common drug in treating solid organ cancers, is hindered by its dose-limiting nephrotoxicity. AKI and CKD are closely related, with renal fibrosis being a key feature of CKD development. Understanding the mechanisms behind cisplatin-induced kidney pathologies is crucial for developing effective preventative measures.
