The accuracy of hip fracture data entered into the national surgical quality improvement program (NSQIP) database

Violette C. Simon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of hip fracture CPT codes and complications entered into the NSQIP registry. The results showed that a portion of patients had inaccurate CPT codes, with significant variation in accuracy among different types of procedures. Additionally, a considerable proportion of complications in hip fracture patients were not documented in the NSQIP data. Therefore, acknowledging the potential limitations of the registry, future research is necessary to validate NSQIP orthopedic data across procedures and institutions.

In-Hospital Morbidity and Mortality With Delays in Femoral Shaft Fracture Fixation

Mitchel R. Obey et al.

Summary: This study confirms that delayed fixation of femoral shaft fractures is associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality. Patients who underwent fixation more than 48 hours after presentation were at the greatest risk of increased morbidity and mortality. Efforts should be made to expedite operative fixation.

The Association of Surgical Timing and Injury Severity With Systemic Complications in Severely Injured Patients With Pelvic Ring Injuries

David G. Rojas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between timing of definitive fixation, injury severity, and systemic complications in severely injured patients with pelvic ring injuries. Results suggested that the severity of injury, rather than the timing of fixation, was most strongly associated with the development of systemic complications. Delayed fixation was associated with a higher incidence of pneumonia, particularly in patients with chest injuries.
