Investigating the effects of biodegradable microplastics and copper ions on probiotic (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens): Toxicity and application

Ruijin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect and mechanism of biodegradable plastics on the growth and metabolism of probiotic bacteria. The results showed that polylactic acid microplastics caused oxidative damage and inhibited cell growth, but did not increase the toxicity of copper to bacteria. Instead, it triggered mechanisms to help bacteria resist the toxicity of copper.

Nanoplastics impacts on Thiobacillus denitrificans: Effects of size and dissolved organic matter

Yuancheng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different sizes of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the growth and denitrification ability of Thiobacillus denitrificans. The presence of DOM exacerbated the adverse effect of 100 nm PS-NPs on denitrification, while the adverse effect of 350 nm PS-NPs on denitrification was not modified by DOM. Additionally, PS-NPs induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and suppressed denitrification gene expression. The study highlights the potential risk of nanoplastics to autotrophic denitrifying bacteria in the presence of DOM.

Effects of nano/microplastics on the growth and reproduction of the microalgae, bacteria, fungi, and Daphnia magna in the microcosms

Shuo Cheng et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, nano/microplastics have become a significant environmental concern. Knowledge gaps, such as the difference between laboratory microplastic particles and environmental microplastics and the limited ecological relevance of single species experiments, need to be addressed for a comprehensive ecological risk assessment. This study found that different types of microplastics had varying effects on the growth of microorganisms. Higher concentrations and smaller particle sizes of microplastics led to lower growth rates of Chlorella spp. and fibrous microplastics inhibited their growth less than fragmented microplastics. Microplastics selectively inhibited or promoted the growth of different species, indicating a potential change in species structure in natural ecosystems.

Polystyrene Nanoplastics Inhibit the Transformation of Tetrabromobisphenol A by the Bacterium Rhodococcus jostii

Shen Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that 20 and 100 nm polystyrene NPs can inhibit the transformation of tetrabromobisphenol A by Gram-positive bacterium Rhodococcus jostii, with smaller particles exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects. PS-NPs adsorb TBBPA on their surface, reducing the bioavailable concentration for transformation, and also induce oxidative stress, affect membrane permeability, and downregulate enzyme activity.

Impact of Plastic Particles on the Horizontal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes to Bacterium: Dependent on Particle Sizes and Antibiotic Resistance Gene Vector Replication Capacities

Xiaojie Hu et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of polystyrene particles with different sizes on the horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) mediated by plasmids into Escherichia coli cells. The results showed that small particles had an effect on the transfer of ARGs, while large particles did not. The effects of particles on plasmid transfer varied depending on the plasmid's replication capacity. The mechanisms involved direct interaction with membrane lipids and interference with plasmid replication. This study contributes to our understanding of the environmental dissemination of ARGs in plastic contamination.

Distinct responses of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 exposed to different levels of polystyrene nanoplastics

Yuxin Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that polystyrene nanoplastics have dual effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, with different concentrations showing varying impacts on growth and metabolism. The production and consumption of ROS by the bacteria were in dynamic balance, genetically regulated to maintain a biotolerable level. Additionally, high levels of PS NPs resulted in down-regulation of denitrification genes but up-regulation of genes related to respiration to cope with stress.

Single and combined effects of antibiotics and nanoplastics from surgical masks and plastic bottles on pathogens

Hasan Saygin et al.

Summary: Over the last decade, the pollution of plastics and antibiotics has become an increasing threat to the environment and human health. However, there is limited information available on the impact of the co-presence of plastics and antibiotics on the environment and human health. This study aimed to investigate the individual and combined influences of nano-sized plastics (surgical masks and plastic bottles) and antibiotics (amoxicillin and spiramycin) on susceptible bacteria and their microbial activity, biofilm formation, and biochemical characteristics. The results showed a reduction in antimicrobial efficiency and changes in microbial activity and biofilm formation due to the presence of plastics.

Interactions between bacteria and nano (micro)-sized polystyrene particles by bacterial responses and microscopy

So Yoon Kim et al.

Summary: Microorganisms play a vital role in biogeochemical cycles and interact with plastic debris. This study examined the interaction between bacteria and nano- and microplastics, finding that the diameter of the plastic particles influenced their effects on bacterial growth and viability. Smaller particles (60 nm) were observed to enter the cells and enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species, while unexpectedly, particles similar in size to the bacterial cells (1040 nm) had the greatest inhibitory effect. The bacteria also formed biofilm complexes in response to exposure to 1 μm-diameter particles.

Submicron polymer particles may mask the presence of toxicants in wastewater effluents probed by reporter gene containing bacteria

Summary: Microplastics are commonly found in aquatic systems and can break down into submicron particles that interact with toxic chemicals. Exposure of polystyrene particles to treated wastewater effluents can reduce the detection of geno- and cytotoxicity by bacteria as a biomonitoring tool. Chlorination of wastewater may mitigate the masking effect of toxic compounds adsorbed to polymer particles by potentially forming new toxic materials.

Contribution of microplastic particles to the spread of resistances and pathogenic bacteria in treated wastewaters

Silvia Galafassi et al.

Summary: Microplastic particles (MPs) are prevalent pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, with a significant number reaching open waters and potentially contributing to the spread of pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. Studies have shown that the bacterial community on MPs differs from planktonic bacteria in treated wastewater, with potentially pathogenic bacteria showing higher abundances in the latter. However, only the sul2 resistance gene was found to be more abundant in the plastisphere compared to the planktonic bacterial community.
