Hindered Tetraphenylethylene Helicates: Chiral Fluorophores with Deep-Blue Emission, Multiple-Color CPL, and Chiral Recognition Ability

Ming Hu et al.

Summary: New hindered tetraphenylethylene (TPE) helicates with substitutions at 2,6-position of phenyl rings were designed and synthesized. These TPE helicates emit strong deep-blue to violet fluorescence and exhibit high enantioselective recognition of chiral tartaric acid and its derivatives, showing potential applications in fluorescent emission, circularly polarized luminescence, and chiral recognition. The derived tetramines possess unprecedented planar structure with sp(2)-hybridized nitrogen, leading to the interplay between aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon through photoinduced electron transfer (PET), making them promising chiral materials.

A simple construction of multiple highly-efficient orange-emitting carboranes based on interlocked molecular aggregations

Zhaojin Wang et al.

Summary: This study designed a reactive group-containing carborane triad as a precursor to synthesize multiple efficient orange-emitting carboranes through nucleophilic substitutions and C-N cross couplings, with high efficiency in the solid state. The molecular aggregations in the solid state were highly rigid due to short-ranged pi···pi and H···H (or F) interactions, and calculations showed characteristics of the excited state in the free and solid states.

Approaches for Fabricating Tri- and Tetraphenylethene-Based Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Using Donor-Acceptor and Non-Donor-Acceptor Molecular Architectures

Deivendran Harshini et al.

Summary: Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have shown excellent performance in terms of portability and affordability, but there is still room for improvement in efficiency and color variability. Research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has discovered efficient blue light emitters. Triphenylethene (TriPE) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) molecules exhibit outstanding solid-state emission and increased device efficiency by suppressing pi-pi stacking interactions. The presence of TriPE and TPE in non-donor-acceptor (non-D-A) and donor-acceptor (D-A) architectures enhances chemical and thermal stability. Different device architectures and potential electron donating/accepting molecules demonstrate diverse light emissions and the substitution effect on TriPE and TPE donor units has significance in OLEDs.

Tianrui Li et al.

Summary: By introducing fluorine atom(s) into Luminescent organic compounds, their packing structure and Luminescence properties can be fine-tuned. This study synthesized three isomers of fluoro/formyl substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives with one fluorine atom via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, and found that these compounds exhibit different Luminescence behavior and responsiveness towards mechanical force and heat compared to non-fluorinated analogs. The resulting composites also show potential in fluorescent thermometers and anti-counterfeiting.
