Recent progress on the removal of antibiotic pollutants using photocatalytic oxidation process

Yanxi Chen et al.

Summary: Due to the widespread use of medicine in recent years, antibiotics as emerging pollutants have been widely detected in the aquatic environment. Photocatalysis driven by sunlight is a promising technology for the removal of antibiotics, as it is green, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. This paper summarizes the recent progress in the photocatalytic removal of antibiotics in the last 5 years, including the classification, structures, and environmental hazards of common antibiotics, as well as the application and challenges of semiconductor photocatalysts in the degradation of different antibiotics.

Occurrence of typical antibiotics, representative antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and genes in fresh and stored source-separated human urine

Xiaoqin Zhou et al.

Summary: Fresh human urine samples contained 18 out of 30 typical antibiotics, with oxytetracycline being the dominant antibiotic at a detection frequency of 100%. After 30 days of storage in ambient environment, a significant reduction in antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria was observed, while the change in antibiotic-resistant genes was insignificant.

Antibiotic exposure and potential risk of depression in the Chinese elderly: a biomonitoring-based population study

Xinji Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that elderly individuals exposed to azithromycin, sulfaclozine, tetracyclines, and veterinary antibiotics were significantly associated with elevated risks of depression. Sex- and age-specific differences were observed in the associations between antibiotic exposures and depression.

Prenatal low-dose antibiotic exposure and children allergic diseases at 4 years of age: A prospective birth cohort study

Menglong Geng et al.

Summary: This study, based on 2453 mother-child pairs, found associations between specific antibiotic exposure during pregnancy and an increased risk of current asthma and eczema in children at 4 years old. Gender did not affect these associations. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore potential mechanisms.

DNA oxidative damage in pregnant women upon exposure to conventional and alternative phthalates

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Pregnant women in South China were studied for exposure to alternative phthalates and their health effects. While the exposure levels of alternative phthalates were lower than conventional phthalates, there were still health risks associated with exposure. Multiple phthalate exposures were found to be correlated with a higher risk of DNA oxidative stress.

Antibiotics biomonitored in urine and obesogenic risk in a community-dwelling elderly population

Yanru Sang et al.

Summary: The study found that elderly individuals exposed to specific types of antibiotics, potentially from the food chain, may contribute to obesity. Specifically, norfloxacin concentrations were associated with body mass index, waist circumference, and body fat percentage. Women were found to have a higher risk of obesity compared to men.

Antibiotic residues in cattle and sheep meat and human exposure assessment in southern Xinjiang, China

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that antibiotic residues in animal-derived foods, especially meat, had a negligible impact on human health and were within an acceptable level of food safety risk. However, the emerging issues of antibiotic residues and bacterial resistance should not be ignored, calling for effective strategies and awareness campaigns to ensure the judicious use of antibiotics and safeguard public health.
