Synergistic Fe-Se Atom Pairs as Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts Boost Low-Temperature Rechargeable Zn-Air Battery

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, bifunctional electrocatalysts, Fe-Se/NC, were successfully constructed by synthesizing atomically dispersed Fe-Se atom pairs supported on N-doped carbon. The obtained Fe-Se/NC exhibited remarkable bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance with a low potential difference of 0.698 V, surpassing that of previously reported Fe-based single-atom catalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the p-d orbital hybridization around the Fe-Se atom pairs resulted in significantly asymmetrical polarized charge distributions. Moreover, Fe-Se/NC-based solid-state rechargeable Zn-air batteries demonstrated superior cycling and stability compared to the traditional Pt/C+Ir/C catalysts, even at extremely low temperatures.

FeP nanoparticles highly dispersed on N,P-doped petaloid carbon nanosheet: Interface engineering and boosted intrinsic ORR activity

Lian-Hua Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF)-like precursor (ATMP-MA) was synthesized by introducing aminotrimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) and melamine (MA) as acid and base ligands. The obtained iron phosphide (FeP) supported on 3D nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)-doped petaloid carbon nanosheet (FeP/NPC) displayed improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with higher onset potential (0.922 V vs. RHE) and diffusion limiting current (5.480 mA cm-2) compared to Pt/C (0.911 V, 5.380 mA cm-2). The proper doping of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) effectively regulated the electronic structure, enhanced electron transport, and lowered the d-band center position of Fe. This work provides a streamlined strategy for enhancing the reactive activity of transition metal phosphides for ORR.
