Jujube stones based highly efficient activated carbon for methylene blue adsorption: Kinetics and isotherms modeling, thermodynamics and mechanism study, optimization via response surface methodology and machine learning approaches

Nasma Bouchelkia et al.

Summary: In this study, water contaminated by methylene blue (MB) dye was treated with activated carbon based on locally collected jujube stones. Response surface methodology (RSM) and GPR_DA_Bootstrap model were used to optimize the treatment process and obtain the optimal conditions. The results showed that the GPR_DA_Bootstrap model outperformed the BBD model in terms of treatment efficiency.

Mixed coagulant-flocculant optimization for pharmaceutical effluent pretreatment using response surface methodology and Gaussian process regression

Hichem Tahraoui et al.

Summary: In this study, wastewater from the Antibiotical-Saidal pharmaceutical plant was pretreated by coagulation-flocculation using copper sulfate (CuSO4), iron chloride (FeCl3), and a mixture of the two salts. Response surface methodology (RSM) and Gaussian process regression coupled with the dragonfly optimization algorithm (GPR-DA) were employed to optimize the treatment process and predict the reduction rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorbance at 254 nm (UV 254), and turbidity. The results showed that the mixed coagulant (CuSO4 + FeCl3) achieved superior treatment efficiency compared to using CuSO4 or FeCl3 alone.

Predictive Model Based on K-Nearest Neighbor Coupled with the Gray Wolf Optimizer Algorithm (KNN_GWO) for Estimating the Amount of Phenol Adsorption on Powdered Activated Carbon

Meriem Zamouche et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption mechanism of phenol on activated carbon from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were performed to study the effects of adsorbent rate, solution temperature, phenol initial concentration, stirring speed, and pH. The Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models fitted well with the adsorption data, showing that the adsorption process was favorable. The KNN_GWO model based on optimization parameters showed high precision and low statistical errors in predicting the amount of phenol adsorption.

Optimization and Prediction of Stability of Emulsified Liquid Membrane (ELM): Artificial Neural Network

Meriem Zamouche et al.

Summary: In this study, the emulsified liquid membrane (ELM) extraction process was optimized to improve emulsion stability, and a neural network model was used to predict the leakage of the inner phase. The results showed that the membrane rupture rate could be minimized by controlling the surfactant concentration, emulsification time, and stirring speed. The neural network model exhibited high statistical coefficients and minimal statistical errors in predicting the inner phase leakage.

Memory, evolutionary operator, and local search based improved Grey Wolf Optimizer with linear population size reduction technique

Rasel Ahmed et al.

Summary: This work proposes an improved grey wolf optimization algorithm that addresses the limitations in terms of population diversity, premature convergence, and the balance between exploration and exploitation behavior. The proposed algorithm incorporates memory, evolutionary operators, stochastic local search, and a linear population size reduction technique. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other popular metaheuristics in various benchmark functions and engineering case studies.

Experimental Analysis and Neural Network Modeling of the Rheological Behavior of Xanthan Gum and Its Derivatives

Madiha Melha Yahoum et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to create a mathematical tool that could predict the rheological flow behavior of functionalized xanthan gum based on the types of chemical groups grafted onto its backbone. Different analyses were done to evaluate six derivatives synthesized via etherification, and it was found that the derivatives had lower molecular weights and exhibited shear-thinning behavior. An ANN model was also created to predict one of the rheological properties, and the results showed that the model was efficient in predicting flow behavior.

Predicting the concentration of sulfate using machine learning methods

Hichem Tahraoui et al.

Summary: Continuous water monitoring is expensive and time-consuming. To overcome this, improving water quality models is necessary. In this study, machine learning models were used to predict sulfate levels in raw water, and GPR and ANN models were found to be the most suitable models.

Hichem Tahraoui et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of decision tree enhanced by bootstrap aggregates and least-squares boosting in modeling the organic matter of water according to its physicochemical parameters. The results show that the Lsboost technology significantly improved the performance of the decision tree model, and the Bag technique was also found to be very effective in optimizing the decision tree model.

A review of water quality index models and their use for assessing surface water quality

Md. Galal Uddin et al.

Summary: The water quality index (WQI) model is a popular tool for evaluating surface water quality, converting extensive data into a single index. While commonly used, the model faces issues such as specificity to regional guidelines and uncertainty in data conversion. This paper compares commonly used WQI models and discusses issues affecting model accuracy.

Predicting the concentration of sulfate (SO42-) in drinking water using artificial neural networks: a case study: Medea-Algeria

Hichem Tahraoui et al.

Summary: This work aimed to predict the soluble sulfate content in drinking water using artificial neural networks (ANN) and multiple linear regressions (MLR) models. The ANN model outperformed the MLR model in terms of predicting accuracy, with a high correlation coefficient of R = 0.99973 and low root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.9755. The non-linear relationship between soluble sulfate content and various physico-chemical characteristics of drinking water was demonstrated, indicating the predictability of the concentration.
