Recent Trends in Advanced Photoinitiators for Vat Photopolymerization 3D Printing

Yinyin Bao

Summary: 3D printing has revolutionized manufacturing and has had a significant impact on the biomedical field. Vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing techniques, such as stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), have gained attention due to their high print resolution, fast speed, low cost, and flexibility in resin material design. The development of photoinitiators and photoinitiating systems has progressed alongside the exploration of 3D printing monomers. The design of new photoinitiating systems not only enables faster printing speeds and low-energy visible light fabrication but also introduces new functions and printing methods through the integration of advanced optics.

A highly sensitive photoinitiating system based on pre-associated ion-pairs for NIR radical photopolymerization of optically clear materials

Junyi Zhou et al.

Summary: A new highly reactive photoinitiating system based on a penta-methine cyanine dye and a triarylalkylborate salt was investigated for radical photopolymerization reactions using near infra-red (NIR) light. The high reactivity is attributed to the photochemical properties of the dye and the combination with the borate salt. The correlation between the borate salt concentration and the rate of polymerization is displayed in a saturation graph.

Rapid High-Resolution 3D Printing and Surface Functionalization via Type I Photoinitiated RAFT Polymerization

Kenny Lee et al.

Summary: RAFT-mediated 3D printing with a photoinitiator allows for rapid curing of resins and high printing rates. By incorporating low concentrations of divinyl comonomers into the initial resins, materials containing thiocarbonylthio groups can be produced for diverse applications. Additionally, the inclusion of RAFT agents improves printing resolution and allows for controlled post-printing transformations on object surfaces.

Selective Heavy Atom Effect Forming Photosensitizing Hot Spots in Double-Stranded DNA Matrix

Xinfeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The formation of triplet excitons is crucial for photosensitization-based photochemistry and photobiology, with the heavy atom effect (HAE) being a basic mechanism for increasing triplet exciton yield. A new HAE mode has been reported through the noncovalent cohosting of heavy atoms and photosensitizers in a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) matrix, which enhances phosphorescence and O-1(2) generation. The dsDNA-hosted HAE provides highly selective recognition for heavy atoms, making it appealing for various singlet oxygen- and phosphorescence-related applications.
