Nature and Measurement of Attention Control

Alexander P. Burgoyne et al.

Summary: Individual differences in attention control are important for various outcomes, but reliable measurement has been a challenge. This study introduces three short and valid attention control tests: Stroop Squared, Flanker Squared, and Simon Squared. Two studies with over 600 participants showed that the Squared tasks have good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Attention control was strongly correlated with other cognitive abilities and explained individual differences in multitasking ability. These Squared tasks are freely available online.

Methods to split cognitive task data for estimating split-half reliability: A comprehensive review and systematic assessment

Thomas Pronk et al.

Summary: This study reviews four different methods for estimating the reliability of cognitive task datasets, and recommends using the Monte Carlo splitting method in combination with task design stratification for the most robust results. The effects of different splitting methods on reliability estimates are discussed based on theoretical analysis.

Mediators between physical activity and academic achievement: A systematic review

Maria Eugenia Visier-Alfonso et al.

Summary: The study suggests that physical activity may positively influence academic achievement through factors such as fitness levels, cognition, mental well-being, and exercise-related behaviors acting as mediators. However, due to the cross-sectional nature of most studies, causal relationships cannot be definitively established at this time.

Genetic Associations Between Executive Functions and Intelligence: A Combined Twin and Adoption Study

Daniel E. Gustavson et al.

Summary: This study examined the genetic structure of executive function in adulthood and its overlap with intelligence using data from twin and adoption studies. The results suggest that executive function abilities are both common and specific, and they are phenotypically and genetically correlated with intelligence.

Cognition, Intelligence and Movement: Extracurricular Physical Activity as a Promoter of Intelligence in Schoolchildren

Mateo Real-Perez et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to assess the relationships between motor capacity, academic performance, and intelligence. The results showed significant correlations between motor capacities and intelligence variables, but no significant relationship with academic performance was found. Additionally, participants who engaged in sports demonstrated better motor capacities and intelligence test results compared to non-participants.

The Indirect Role of Executive Functions on the Relationship between Cardiorespiratory Fitness and School Grades

Marc Yanguez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the indirect effects of cardiorespiratory fitness on scholastic performance through executive functions. The results showed that different domains of executive functions partially explained the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and mathematics, and grammar, spelling, and vocabulary grades. Cognitive flexibility played a leading role in this relationship, with the strongest impact on mathematics and low-level language topics.

How physical activity, fitness, and motor skills contribute to math performance: Working memory as a mediating factor

Heidi J. Syvaoja et al.

Summary: This study found that motor skills and muscular fitness had indirect positive associations with math performance through visuospatial working memory. The results support the viewpoint that the connections between motor skills, fitness, and physical activity to academic skills are mediated via specific cognitive skills.

Relations Between Executive Functions and Academic Outcomes in Elementary School Children: A Meta-Analysis

Jamie A. Spiegel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine developmental patterns of relations between executive function components and academic outcomes in elementary school-age children. Results showed that accounting for general EF resulted in weaker relations between EF and academics, although they remained significant. Working memory was consistently moderately associated with reading, math, and language, while the relationships between inhibitory control and shifting with academic outcomes varied based on the academic skill examined.
