Evidence of Mpox Virus Infection Among Persons Without Characteristic Lesions or Rash Presenting for First Dose of JYNNEOS Vaccine-District of Columbia, August 2022

Summary: We evaluated the prevalence of mpox virus in blood, pharyngeal, and rectal specimens among individuals without characteristic rash who were receiving JYNNEOS vaccine. Our findings suggest that risk-based screening for mpox in individuals without skin lesions or rash using pharyngeal swabs, rectal swabs, and/or blood may have limited utility.

The Roles of Unrecognized Monkeypox Cases, Contact Isolation and Vaccination in Determining Epidemic Size in Belgium: A Modeling Study

Summary: This study used a network model to simulate a monkeypox epidemic among men who have sex with men. The findings suggest that unidentified infections play a crucial role in the epidemic, and vaccinating individuals at highest risk of infection is more effective in reducing the size of the epidemic compared to post-exposure vaccination of sexual partners.

Retrospective detection of asymptomatic monkeypox virus infections among male sexual health clinic attendees in Belgium

Summary: The magnitude of the 2022 monkeypox virus outbreak has exceeded any previous outbreak, and undiagnosed infections may be driving the epidemic. A study found four men attending a Belgian sexual health clinic to be infected with monkeypox. One man had a painful rash while the other three were asymptomatic, but their infections were confirmed through clinical examination. These findings suggest that undiagnosed cases of monkeypox could contribute to the transmission and scale of the 2022 outbreak.

Summary: This study found that pooled sample testing using gargle samples had high consistency with single-site sample testing in screening for STI infections in asymptomatic men who have sex with men. The results suggest that gargle samples can be a suitable part of pooled samples for screening for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
