The nonneuronal cholinergic system in the colon: A comprehensive review

Han Li et al.

Summary: This review discusses the mechanisms of acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis and release in the nonneuronal cholinergic system (NNCS), as well as the effects of ACh on colonic function and tumor development. Studies have shown that ACh plays a crucial role in immune regulation, repair of intestinal epithelial cells and vascular endothelial cells, differentiation of intestinal stem cells, and colonic motility.

Antihypertensive Mechanism of Orally Administered Acetylcholine in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

Shohei Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that low-dose orally administered ACh can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats by acting on gastrointestinal M3 muscarinic ACh receptors to increase afferent vagal nerve activity, resulting in decreased sympathetic nervous activity and noradrenaline release.

Perillyl alcohol attenuates rheumatoid arthritis via regulating TLR4/NF-κB and Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathways: A comprehensive study onin-vitro and in-vivo experimental models

Eswara Rao Puppala et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of perillyl alcohol (POH) on rheumatoid arthritis. The results demonstrated that POH suppressed inflammation and oxidative stress through regulating signaling pathways in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. These findings suggest the potential therapeutic effects of POH in rheumatoid arthritis.

Nerves in gastrointestinal cancer: from mechanism to modulations

Nathalie Vaes et al.

Summary: Maintaining gastrointestinal health is challenging due to the complex and dynamic nature of the gastrointestinal tract. Disturbances in this environment can lead to gastrointestinal cancers, which account for a significant proportion of cancer cases and deaths worldwide. While the role of the tumor microenvironment has been extensively studied, the importance of the nervous system in gastrointestinal cancers has only recently been recognized. This article sheds light on the neural influences during gastrointestinal carcinogenesis, focusing on interactions between neurons and components of the gastrointestinal tract and tumor microenvironment, neural signaling pathways, and the impact on cancer hallmarks. Neural-related therapies for gastrointestinal cancer management are also discussed.

Aster tataricus alleviates constipation by antagonizing the binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptor and inhibiting Ca2+ influx

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that ethanol extract of Aster tataricus (ATE) could significantly promote small intestinal transit, reduce fecal amount, increase fecal water content, and alleviate colonic pathological damage. In vitro experiments showed that ATE could attenuate constipation by antagonizing acetylcholine binding to muscarinic receptors, inhibiting calcium influx, and anti-inflammatory effects in a concentration-dependent manner.

Anti-inflammatory property and functional substances of Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis

Xiaorong Su et al.

Summary: Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis possesses anti-inflammatory properties, with the main contribution coming from its isochlorogenic acid-rich and biflavonoid-rich fractions. The main components, isochlorogenic acids A and C, as well as ochnaflavone, are primarily responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects.
