Mechanisms of helium irradiation blistering and surface deformation in tungsten

Cuncai Fan et al.

Summary: The present study presents a systematic investigation of helium irradiation blistering on tungsten surfaces with different orientations ({100}, {110}, and {111}). The results reveal that the blistering deformation starts with nanocrack nucleation at the peak in the bubble depth distribution, followed by gas buildup in a primary cavity. The study also shows that the blistering behaviors vary between different orientations of tungsten surfaces.

Molecular dynamics simulation study of helium bubble growth on W/Ta semi-coherent interface

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: Misfit dislocations have a significant impact on the nucleation and growth of helium bubbles, with helium bubbles energetically preferring to nucleate at the intersections of misfit dislocations or on some misfit dislocations. During the bubble growing process, metal interstitial atoms pushed out by the bubble are directly absorbed into nearby misfit dislocations, leading the helium bubble to move away from the bimetal interface.

Fuzz formation on grain-refined bulk tungsten surfaces after low energy helium plasma exposure

Wei Qian et al.

Summary: With increasing exposure temperature and plasma fluence, both grain-refined and coarse-grained tungsten undergo similar surface morphology evolution, transitioning from a polished state to hill and valley structures, and eventually to fuzz formation. Further analysis indicates that there is no preferential segregation of helium bubbles at grain boundaries and the bubbles are distributed at shallow depths, which may explain the similar surface morphology evolution between grain-refined and coarse-grained tungsten.

Modeling irradiation-induced intragranular gas bubble in tungsten under external tensile loading

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation and evolution of irradiation-induced helium bubbles driven by external applied stress in single-crystalline tungsten were investigated using the phase-field method. The model was validated by comparing with reported numerical results, focusing on the intrinsic lattice distortion patterns of voids and bubbles. The study found a strong correlation between the size and density of bubbles and the loading level.

Effect of helium and its synergism with displacement damage on microstructure of CLAM steel investigated by single, sequential and simultaneous Fe and He ion irradiations

Ziyang Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of helium (He) and displacement damage on microstructure evolution were investigated by exposing China Low-Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel to single Fe, sequential He/Fe, sequential Fe/He, and simultaneous Fe + He ion beam irradiations. The results show that He inhibits the growth and reduces the density of dislocation loops induced by high-temperature He post-irradiation. The type and density of bubbles formed in different irradiation sequences also vary.

Helium-induced morphology evolution in tungsten under thermal treatment

Mykola Ialovega et al.

Summary: The evolution of surface and near-surface morphology of helium-irradiated tungsten during thermal cycling was studied using electron microscopy and positron annihilation spectroscopy. The results showed that the shape and density of holes and bubbles changed with thermal cycling, and the surface became smoother. Electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements and positron annihilation spectroscopy were used to investigate the properties and evolution of defects in the helium-irradiated tungsten.

Diffusion, Trapping, and Dissociation Behaviours of Helium at the Σ5 Grain Boundary in Tungsten: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Baoqin Fu et al.

Summary: The diffusion, trapping, and dissociation behaviors of helium at the Sigma 5<100>(310) symmetric tilt grain boundaries in tungsten were systematically investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Key parameters were identified using various methods, showing that grain boundaries act as strong sinks for helium and inhibit its diffusion. The temperature effect on the diffusivity of helium at grain boundaries can be described by the Arrhenius relationship, while the diffusion of bulk helium is non-Arrhenius.

Damage evolutions of completely recrystallized W-Y2O3 composite evaluated using the dual effects of electron beam thermal shock and helium ion irradiation

Gang Yao et al.

Summary: In extreme service environments, the addition of Y2O3 particles can significantly improve the crack resistance of materials. As the crack width increases, the aggregation of fuzz structures inside the cracks becomes more evident. Additionally, the resistance of Y2O3 particles to irradiation damage improves as the particle size decreases. The phase interface plays a crucial role in the helium ion irradiation process.

Hybrid diffusive-displacive helium outgassing in Cu/Nb multilayer composites

Rui Gao et al.

Summary: Gas generation can degrade material properties in nuclear applications, and self-assembled bubble channels are proposed to help release gas. The study found that the outgassing networks in helium-irradiated Cu/Nb multilayers with low structural damage have a hybrid diffusive-displacive nature, requiring careful design of the outgassing strategy to avoid structural failure.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the behavior of typical radiation defects under stress gradient field in tungsten

Jingzhong Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, the behaviors of radiation-induced defects in tungsten under the effect of stress gradient field were simulated using the molecular dynamics method. It was found that the stress gradient affects the migration properties of interstitial defects, while the migration of vacancies is hardly affected.

Energetics and diffusional properties of helium in W-Ta systems studied by a new ternary potential

Summary: This study presents an interatomic potential for the ternary W-Ta-He system by fitting results from first-principles calculations, and investigates the interaction and diffusion properties of He in W and Ta. It is found that the solute Ta has a certain influence on the diffusion and aggregation of He atoms, with a pinning effect on He cluster diffusion in W.
