Metamaterial-based octave-wide terahertz bandpass filters

Ali Maleki et al.

Summary: Octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz (THz) region based on bilayer-metamaterial (BLMM) structures are presented. The passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance of 70% and a stopband rejection of 20 dB. The filters were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithography process. Experimental characterization shows good agreement with simulation results. The use of two superimposed BLMM (2BLMM) devices further enhances the roll-off steepness and stopband rejection while maintaining a high transmittance.

Strong interaction between two photons and a plasmon of a complementary metamaterial in a terahertz dual cavity

Fanqi Meng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates strong coupling between the effective magnetic dipole moments of complementary split-slotring metamaterials and the magnetic field of a cavity radiation mode, with pronounced Rabi splitting indicating ultrastrong coupling. By exploiting the complementary characteristics of split-slotring resonators, a dual cavity with strong interaction among two photons and the plasmon in the cavity is realized, resulting in an increased generalized Rabi splitting compared to the single-cavity case involving only one photon and one plasmon.

The resonances of eSRR can be tuned by changing the gaps within the structure, allowing for stable resonances. The device exhibits optical on and off states in TE and TM modes, showing three resonances at 0.19 THz, 0.43 THz, and 0.68 THz, with the potential for use in sensors, programmable devices, radars, and optical communication applications.

Summary: Chiral metasurfaces exhibit different electromagnetic responses to circularly polarized light, such as circular dichroism and optical activity. A novel all-silicon chiral metasurface is proposed in this study by introducing destructive interference between achiral meta-atoms, achieving a maximum circular dichroism of 0.54 and bandwidth of 0.15 THz. Experimental results are in good agreement with simulations, and the proposed scheme can also be utilized for generating various interesting functions.

Active Terahertz Modulator and Slow Light Metamaterial Devices with Hybrid Graphene-Superconductor Photonic Integrated Circuits

Samane Kalhor et al.

Summary: This paper introduces metamaterial photonic integrated circuits with arrays of hybrid graphene-superconductor coupled split-ring resonators capable of modulating and slowing down terahertz light. The optical responses of the hybrid device can be modulated in various ways, such as electrically by changing the conductivity and carrier concentrations in graphene and by modifying the device temperature sensitivity. Maximum modulation depths and significant enhancements of THz transmission, group delay, and EIT responses are achieved, paving the way for active optoelectronic modulators, filters, phase shifters, and slow light devices in chip-scale future communication and computation systems.

Tunable Extraordinary Optical Transmission with Graphene in Terahertz

Zijie Gao et al.

Summary: Tunable extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) with graphene is achieved in the terahertz frequency regime using a novel metallic ring-rod nested structure, leading to the generation of double-enhanced transmission peaks primarily originating from the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). By regulating the Fermi energy (E-f) of the graphene, an adjustment from bimodal EOT to unimodal EOT is obtained, demonstrating promising application prospects in frequency-selective surfaces, communication, filtering, and radar.

Terahertz high-Q quasi-bound states in the continuum in laser-fabricated metallic double-slit arrays

Dejun Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a laser-fabricated metallic resonator based on a double-slit array (DSA) at terahertz frequencies, showing sharp resonances with high Q-factors. By breaking the structural symmetry of DSAs, the infinite Q-factor bound states in the continuum (BIC) can be transformed into quasi-BICs, with Q-factors decreasing gradually as asymmetry parameter increases. The influence of imperfections in experimental samples on the transmission properties of DSAs and the effect of metal thickness on the quasi-BICs are also investigated, indicating potential practical applications in electromagnetic wave filtering and biomolecular sensing.

Quasi-bound states in the continuum in metal complementary periodic cross-shaped resonators at terahertz frequencies

Dejun Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) in free-standing metal complementary periodic cross-shaped resonators (CPCRs) at terahertz frequencies. By breaking mirror symmetry through reducing the length of one arm in CPCRs, the Q-factor of the quasi-BIC can reach a significantly high value of 102. The high Q-factor is mainly determined by material loss rather than radiative loss, enabling the exploration of ultra-narrowband filters and ultra-sensitive sensors at terahertz frequencies.
