Characterization of milling robot mode shape and analysis of the weak parts causing end vibration

Jiawei Wu et al.

Summary: Existing studies on the dynamic characteristics of milling robots have ignored the robot's structure, but structural mode shape analysis is crucial for accurate vibration control. This paper uses a 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometer to study a milling robot and proposes an R-2 based compliance identification criterion to simplify the characterization of mode shapes by identifying the robot's deformed parts, such as joints. Then, the multi-joint and full-DOF mode shape (MFMS) is introduced to succinctly describe the robot's mode shape by mapping vibrations from multiple measurement points to the joints. MFMS analysis reveals the weak excitation direction at the tool center point (TCP) and successfully predicts a nearly halved TCP amplitude after changing the milling force direction. The influence of weak joint DOFs on the TCP vibration is analyzed, showing that only a few weak joint DOFs exist in each mode and they vary depending on the mode, providing instructive insights for accurate vibration suppression and joint enhancement.

Estimating pose-dependent FRF in machining robots using multibody dynamics and Gaussian Process Regression

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The Frequency Response Functions (FRF) of a robot at its TCP are crucial for modeling and suppressing vibrations during machining operations. Traditional experimental measurement methods are not efficient for obtaining FRF in arbitrary postures, so predictive models are required. In this study, a new parameter identification method is proposed to improve the performance of multibody models, along with Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to model the variation of joint elastic parameters by posture.

Summary: Regenerative chatter is an important factor affecting the efficiency and quality of robot milling, and posture optimization plays a significant role in stability improvement. By analyzing the impact of low-frequency vibration caused by robot structure mode on the tool-workpiece engagement state, a stability prediction model has been established to provide a theoretical basis for accurate robotic milling positioning.

Can mode coupling chatter happen in milling?

Huseyin Celikag et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on diagnosing mode coupling chatter in robotic milling and provides theoretical and experimental evidence that mode coupling chatter is not possible in milling operations. The results show that mode coupling chatter stability boundaries are very low and vaguely dependent on spindle speed, contradicting experimental observations. Therefore, it is concluded that the assumption of chip thickness depending only on current vibrations does not apply to milling operations, making mode coupling chatter in milling not possible.

Hybrid statistical modelling of the frequency response function of industrial robots

Vinh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper presents an efficient hybrid statistical modelling methodology that combines Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) and Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) to optimize sampling density and robot downtime for determining the robot Frequency Response Function (FRF) as a function of arm configuration. The approach calibrates a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) model with FRF data from EMA, then updates the model with FRFs calculated from OMA of milling forces and tool tip vibration data using Bayesian inference and efficient hyperparameter updating. The proposed hybrid robot FRF modelling method is experimentally validated to yield accurate predictions of the robot FRF while being computationally efficient.
