Polyhydroxybutyrate biosynthesis from different waste materials, degradation, and analytic methods: a short review

Sumaiya Akhlaq et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental consciousness has led to an increase in the use of renewable resources, particularly products that decompose into environmentally friendly constituents. However, the high cost of environmentally friendly initiatives and regulations and compromised product quality pose challenges. Plastic pollution is a widespread issue with potential harm to living beings. The use of bioplastics has helped address these concerns.

Polyhydroxybutyrate blends: A solution for biodegradable packaging?

Marius Stelian Popa et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, properties, and application of Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blends with other biodegradable polymers. The focus is on the compatibility of PHB with other polymers and the methods used to improve dispersion and interface. The changes in PHB morphology, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties induced by the second polymer are critically analyzed. The review also summarizes the biodegradability and recyclability strategies of PHB blends, along with the processing techniques adapted to the intended application.

Polyhydroxybutyrate: a review of experimental and simulation studies of the effect of fillers on crystallinity and mechanical properties

Katarzyna Majerczak et al.

Summary: This review examines the influence of fillers on the crystallisation and microstructure of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) composites, as well as their relationship with mechanical properties. The results indicate that fillers act as nucleants, increasing the number of spherulites in PHB composites while reducing their size. However, there is no strong consensus on the effect of crystallinity on the tensile properties of PHB-filler composites.

The GGDEF-EAL protein CdgB from Azospirillum baldaniorum Sp245, is a dual function enzyme with potential polar localization

Victor Viruega-Gongora et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of the predicted multi-domain protein CdgB, it was found that it has dual activity in A. baldaniorum bacteria, functioning as both a c-di-GMP phosphodiesterase and a diguanylate cyclase. The protein interacts with the cell membrane and potentially localizes to the cell poles.

Surface-Modified Highly Biocompatible Bacterial-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate): A Review on the Promising Next-Generation Biomaterial

Jun Meng Chai et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bio-based polymers synthesized by bacteria under limited nutritional elements. Among them, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [(P(3HB-co-4HB)] has emerged as an attractive biomaterial for medical applications due to its desirable properties, but its hydrophobic nature limits its applicability. Through surface modifications and integration of nanotechnology, these limitations can be overcome, enhancing the functionality and biocompatibility of PHAs for diverse medical applications.

Composition control of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) copolymerization by oxygen transfer rate (OTR) in Azotobacter vinelandii OPNA

Angie Johanna Torres-Pedraza et al.

Summary: The study evaluated changes in PHBV composition by the PHB overproducing mutant OPNA of Azotobacter vinelandii under different conditions. Results showed that OTR significantly affected PHBV composition, with higher 3HV content achieved at higher OTRmax. Manipulating OTR could be a feasible strategy for producing PHBV copolymers with different monomeric compositions at an industrial level.
