Combination of magnetic biochar beads and peroxymonosulfate pretreatment process for mitigating ultrafiltration membrane fouling caused by typical natural organic matters in water

Yatong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic biochar-iron cross-linking alginate (MBCA) beads were prepared using alginate doped with coffee grounds to alleviate the membrane fouling caused by natural organic matter (NOM) in ultrafiltration (UF) process. The combination of MBCA-beads and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) served as an UF pre-treatment, and proved effective in completely alleviating the membrane fouling caused by humic acid (HA). The MBCA-beads/PMS pretreatment could remove 98% of UV254 and 68% of DOC when HA and sodium alginate (SA) were present together.

Using colloidal AFM probe technique and XDLVO theory to predict the transport of nanoplastics in porous media

Li-Juan Feng et al.

Summary: The plastic concentration in terrestrial systems is much higher than that in marine ecosystems, leading to concerns about their impact on agricultural sustainability. Previous research on nanoplastic transport in soil relied on qualitative predictions, but lacked direct measurements of interfacial forces. This study conducted multiscale investigations and found that amino-modified nanoplastics were more mobile than carboxyl-modified nanoplastics. The transport of both types of nanoplastics was influenced by ionic strength and pH. Hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity-mediated interactions and particle heterogeneity interfered with interfacial forces, contradicting the qualitative predictions of existing theory. The combination of theory and atomic force microscopy can provide valuable insights into the fate of nanoparticles in soil.

Discrepant effects of monovalent cations on membrane fouling induced by colloidal polymer: Evaluation and mechanism investigation

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Na+ and K+ on APAM-based membrane fouling and reveals the mechanisms behind the fouling. The research finds that an increase in the ionic strength of Na+ and K+ exacerbates the reduction of relative flux and the accumulation of fouling resistance, while also causing the fouling layer to become denser. Furthermore, K+ has a stronger effect on membrane fouling compared to Na+.

Microfiltration pretreatment of polymer-flooding produced wastewater before desalination: Role of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in membrane fouling

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: By studying the fouling mechanisms of anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) in high-salinity environments, it was found that both divalent cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ aggravated membrane fouling. Compared to hydrated Mg2+, hydrated Ca2+ has a larger charge density and can form regular porous complexes with APAM carboxylate, resulting in weaker osmotic pressure. Therefore, lower fouling resistances and higher flux recovery rates were achieved in the case of Ca2+.

Summary: Residual aluminum, specifically in the form of Ala-NOM complexes, is a significant contributor to nanofiltration membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. Increasing the concentration of both residual aluminum and coexisting natural organic matter aggravates membrane fouling. Residual aluminum produced from polyaluminum chloride has a higher membrane fouling potential compared to that produced from aluminum chloride.

Summary: The study introduced a mixed hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface by adding anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) to crude oil solutions to mitigate NF membrane fouling. The addition of APAM initially aggravated flux decline rate and reversible fouling resistance, but the subsequent addition of calcium ions (Ca2+) caused the most serious fouling, which was eventually mitigated in the pseudo-stable stage with the presence of APAM.

Research on the influence of polyaluminum chloride and benzotriazole on membrane fouling and membrane desalination performance

Yong Suo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the behavior and mechanism of nanofiltration membrane fouling in membrane water treatment, as well as the impact of fouling on membrane desalination efficiency. Results showed that PAC caused the most severe membrane fouling, followed by inorganic salts and BTA. PAC formed larger and loosely attached fouling layer on the membrane surface, while BTA increased the adhesion and cohesion between fouling and membrane. Contrary to BTA, PAC had a reverse interception effect on inorganic salts and the denudation effect of cross-flow shear force on the membrane surface maintained high permeability of membrane pores.
