Experimental study on the thermal characteristics of a 3D thermosyphon heat sink

S. Y. Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional thermosyphon (3D-TS) heat sink was experimentally investigated, which combined the advantages of vapor chamber, thermosyphon, and folded fins. The results showed that the overall thermal resistance had a negative correlation with the heating power and air volume flow rate, with the lowest thermal resistance of 0.14 K.W-1 achieved. The high temperature on the folded fins indicated the extension of phase change heat transfer from the flat vapor chamber to the vertical thermosyphon tubes. It was also found that a relatively large air volume flow rate could not further reduce the overall thermal resistance for a small heating power.

Summary: Flow boiling of dielectric fluids in minichannels provides promising cooling alternatives for achieving high heat flux cooling. Experimental investigations on flow boiling performance in minichannels were conducted with six different surface characteristics and HFE-7000 as the working fluid. The results revealed different flow patterns, including single-phase flow, bubbly flow, intermittent flow, and annular flow. It was found that the presence of elliptical pin fins significantly enhanced the flow boiling performance, while the presence of distribution pin fins improved flow distribution and heat transfer. Tip clearance also exhibited a positive effect at low values (<5%).

Flow and thermal performance of a multi-jet twisted square microchannel heat sink using CuO-water nanofluid

Zhiming Tan et al.

Summary: Due to advancements in micro manufacturing and 3D printing, the complex shape of microchannel heat sinks (MCHS) can now be achieved, allowing for improved heat transfer characteristics. In this study, a twisted tube geometry was applied to microchannels and the thermal and hydrodynamic performance of twisted square microchannels with jet impingement was investigated. The arrangement of the jet channels was studied, comparing one-jet and multi-jet microchannel heat sinks in terms of temperature profile, pressure drop, and heat transfer characteristics. The results showed that applying the twisted geometry increased the Nusselt number by 16.48% with minimal pressure drop increase. Furthermore, integrating jet impingement improved the thermal-hydrodynamic performance of MCHS, reducing thermal resistance by up to 41%. Finally, it was concluded that jet arrangement at torsion angles of 45 degrees, 135 degrees, and 225 degrees provided better performance. This study provides quantitative characterization of MCHS performance and guidance for jet arrangement design.

Alexandru Vardaru et al.

Summary: The main goal of this paper is to develop a new solar hybrid nanofluid with improved thermo-physical properties for solar applications in order to enhance solar efficiency. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was synthesized using the modified Hummers' method, while silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized through liquid-phase reduction. Characterization of the Ag-rGO/water hybrid nanofluid was done using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Stability of the prepared hybrid nanofluid was investigated through measurements of Zeta potential and PI index. The results showed enhanced thermal conductivity and viscosity, as well as a slight increase in density, with increasing concentration of Ag-rGO nanofluid.

Influence of system pressure on flow boiling in microchannels

Vivian Y. S. Lee et al.

Summary: The effect of system pressure on the flow boiling characteristics of HFE-7200 in a parallel microchannel heat sink was studied. Increasing pressure reduced pressure drop and increased bubble generation frequency and two-phase heat transfer coefficients. Smaller bubble diameters at higher pressures caused a delay in flow regime transition and flow reversal. The experimental work provides promising methods to manage flow instabilities and enhance heat transfer performance in two-phase microchannel systems.
