Capacitive contribution matters in facilitating high power battery materials toward fast-charging alkali metal ion batteries

Tianqi He et al.

Summary: In the background of sustainable development, alkali metal ion batteries and supercapacitors, as representatives of electrochemical energy storage systems, have developed rapidly in the past few decades. However, supercapacitors and alkali metal ion batteries with high power density and high energy density, respectively, have struggled to meet the demand for high power and energy densities. Therefore, integrating the energy storage mechanisms of supercapacitors and alkali metal ion batteries in the same system has become the preferred approach for most researchers. This review systematically summarizes and discusses the introduction of capacitive contribution into electrode materials of alkali metal ion batteries, and explores the influences of electrode materials' capacitive contribution on the energy and power densities of batteries.

Anodic Interfacial Evolution in Extremely Fast Charged Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abhishek Sarkar et al.

Summary: Interfacial reaction mechanisms at the anode/separator interface play a crucial role in the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries during fast charging. The study investigates the evolution and interactions of aging mechanisms at the anode/separator interface in lithium cobalt oxide/graphite pouch cells charged at variable rates. It is found that fast charging leads to incremental lithium loss and capacity fade, but the magnitude of capacity fade reduces with the number of cycles. XPS and SEM analyses reveal electrolyte decomposition, increase in lithium concentration, dendritic lithium growth on the anode surface, and film fracture as the mechanisms involved.
