Mechanical properties of low-density cement under shale oil in-situ conversion conditions

Hailong Li et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of a low-density cement under shale oil in-situ conversion conditions was studied in this paper. A series of tests were conducted to determine its physical and mechanical properties, and XRD and TGA tests were performed for composition evaluations after exposure to high temperatures. The results showed that the cement's strength was stabilized after 7 days at 50 degrees C, but deteriorated significantly at temperatures above 380 degrees C due to the decomposition of hydration products. The triaxial test results indicated that the mechanical properties were sensitive to confining pressure, and pore collapse was the main cause for the change in failure patterns from brittle to ductile.

Thermomechanical behaviour of well cement in different geological formations under the coupled effects of temperature and pressure

M. H. Samarakoon et al.

Summary: Ensuring the intactness of cement sheaths is crucial for deep well applications in extreme underground conditions. This study investigates the behavior of wellbore materials, including steel casing, annulus cement sheaths, and surrounding rock formations, under continuous steam injection. The results show that materials in carbonate formations are more vulnerable to stress than those in sandstone formations, and the retention time of maximum temperature in cement sheaths is shorter in sandstone than in carbonate. It is also found that the cement sheaths in compliant formations like sandstone may fail due to tensile cracking along the thinnest thickness.

Effects of confinement pressure on the mechanical behavior of an oil well cement paste

Victor Nogueira Lima et al.

Summary: Oil well cement paste plays a crucial role in providing mechanical support to casing and preventing uncontrolled flow of formation fluids along the wellbore. This study examines the mechanical behavior and strength of the cement paste under confinement, showing that increasing confining pressure enhances sample ductility and axial strain corresponding to ultimate deviatoric stress. The results suggest that the confined stress-strain behavior of oil well cement paste can be described by a simple nonlinear constitutive equation.

Evolution of physical and mechanical properties of cementing materials during underground energy exploitation and storage

Feng Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that with the increase of confining pressure and temperature, the mechanical properties of cement stone change from strain softening to ideal plasticity, and finally become strain hardening. Temperature has a complex effect on cohesion and friction angle of cement stone, and it is important to control the temperature during cementing design and construction.

Influence of curing temperature on the hydration and strength development of Class G Portland cement

Xueyu Pang et al.

Summary: The experimental program investigated the hydration and strength development of Class G oil well cement under various curing temperatures. Results showed linear relationships between heat of hydration, non-evaporable water content, and degree of hydration, largely independent of curing temperature. Curing temperature influences hydration and strength development rates, which can be modeled using an equivalent age method.

Triaxial behavior of a stabilized and a highly porous oil well cement paste at different saturation and drainage conditions

Victor Nogueira Lima et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of well cement under different porosity, saturation, confining pressure, and drainage conditions. It is found that high-porosity cement exhibits lower strength and reduced elastic moduli, while stabilized cement shows increased stiffness and brittle failure under saturated and undrained conditions. Increasing confining pressure leads to increased ductility and strain hardening behavior in both cements. The porous cement exhibits less sensitivity to drainage conditions.

Effects of Curing Pressure on the Long-Term Strength Retrogression of Oil Well Cement Cured under 200 °C

Hongtao Liu et al.

Summary: The influences of curing pressure on the physical and mechanical property development of oil well cement during long-term curing were studied. Results showed that high pressure curing led to a more compact microstructure, reducing the rate of strength retrogression in the long term. Samples with reinforcement materials exhibited improved performance.

Cement stress and microstructure evolution during curing in semi-rigid high-pressure environments

Meng Meng et al.

Summary: This study measured the initial stress state of multiple cement formulations cured under high pressure and found that they exhibited dense microstructures with low permeability and anisotropic stress state within a semi-rigid steel pipe. The results also showed a staged curing process where cement evolved from a slurry into a pre-stressed porous medium.

Summary: Well integrity is crucial in protecting human life and the environment while maintaining oil production, with cement behavior playing a key role. By testing mechanical and friction parameters of cement, a numerical model was developed to analyze wellbore stability, revealing the impact of friction parameters and mechanical properties of cement on the integrity of the well.
