Contamination, sources and health risks of potentially toxic elements in the coastal multimedia environment of South China

Weili Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of eight potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in a typical area of South China and evaluated their distributions, seasonal variations, pollution degrees, potential health risks, and sources in seawater, sediment, and organisms. The results showed that the concentrations of certain PTEs were higher in bottom seawater compared to surface water, while others were higher in surface seawater. Higher levels of PTEs were found in surface sediment, with mercury (Hg) being the main contamination element. The study also found that long-term consumption of certain fish poses a noncarcinogenic health risk to children.

Mangrove reforestation provides greater blue carbon benefit than afforestation for mitigating global climate change

Shanshan Song et al.

Summary: Blue carbon benefit has not been compared between mangrove reforestation and afforestation pathways at the global scale. This study shows that mangrove reforestation has a greater carbon storage potential per hectare than afforestation, mainly due to favorable intertidal positioning, higher nitrogen availability, and lower salinity. Reforestation of deforested mangrove regions worldwide could lead to a global uptake of 671.5-688.8 Tg CO2-eq over a 40-year period, 60% more than afforesting the same global area on marginal tidal flats.

Soil Amendments and Foliar Melatonin Reduced Pb Uptake, and Oxidative Stress, and Improved Spinach Quality in Pb-Contaminated Soil

Naeem Iqbal et al.

Summary: Amending Pb-affected soil with a combo immobilizing dose (CIA) of biochar and magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKC) can reduce Pb uptake in plants. Combining CIA with foliar applications of proline and melatonin can further reduce Pb uptake and oxidative stress in spinach. The most effective treatment is CIA+melatonin, which significantly reduces Pb availability in soil and plant tissues, alleviates oxidative stress, and improves plant biomass and nutrients. The results highlight the importance of CIA+melatonin in remediating Pb-polluted soil and improving spinach quality.

Release of sediment metals bound by glomalin related soil protein in waterfowls inhabiting mangrove patches

Hanyi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the release of metals from mangrove surface sediments and Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) was investigated. It was found that GRSP can efficiently transfer copper, zinc, lead, and arsenic from sediments to waterfowls. These findings provide new insights into the potential risk of GRSP acting as a metal delivery vehicle in the food chain.

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) in metal sequestration at Pb/Zn-contaminated sites

Lang Qiu et al.

Summary: This study found that the symbiosis between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Pteris vittata showed a higher capability in sequestering metals by GRSP in contaminated sites, compared to Miscanthus sinensis and Cyperus rotundus. Pteris vittata exhibited significantly higher mycorrhizal root colonization and GRSP accumulation in soil than the other two plants. There was a significant negative correlation between GRSP and the concentration of bioavailable and total metals, indicating the potential of GRSP in reducing metal bioavailability in polluted sites.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at subcritical levels as novel indicators of microbial adaptation in a pre-industrial river delta

Yazhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a field investigation in the abandoned Yellow River Delta to explore the distribution and ecological roles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in benthic microbial patterns. The study found that PAH levels in the area were relatively low and not dependent on distance, indicating long-term anthropogenic input. Molecular ratios and positive matrix factorization analysis identified three main PAH sources. The benthic microbiome did not show a significant response to PAHs, but certain phyla correlated with PAH source indicators, suggesting that these indicators can serve as environmental indicators for microbial adaptation.

Immobilization of lead(II) and zinc(II) onto glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP): Adsorption properties and interaction mechanisms

Bo Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions on glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP). Results show that the adsorption of Pb(II) and Zn(II) on GRSP follows the pseudo second-order model, and the adsorption process is influenced by pollution level, pH value, and GRSP content. The surface structure of GRSP is irregularly blocky or flaky, with metal ions uniformly distributed on its surface. Carboxyl and nitro groups on GRSP act as ligands, forming complexes with divalent metal ions. The interaction between GRSP and metals is mainly through surface complexation. This research provides new insights into the transport and transformation of heavy metals onto GRSP in mangrove sediment and aqueous ecosystems.

Pollution Assessment and Source Apportionment of Soil Heavy Metals in a Coastal Industrial City, Zhejiang, Southeastern China

Shiyi Wang et al.

Summary: In this research, Ningbo City in southeastern China was studied to assess the status of soil heavy metal contamination and identify the sources of contamination. The results revealed that almost 70% of the area was polluted by heavy metals, with nickel, chromium, and zinc being the main enriched metals. Five sources were identified using the PMF model, including geological, atmospheric deposition, transportation emissions, mixed agriculture and industry, and mixed geology and industry. The Unmix model identified four sources, including mixed geology, agriculture, and industry; transportation emissions; geological; and mixed geology and industry. These findings hold practical significance for pollution source risk assessment and management.

Summary: Under climate change scenarios, macroalgae farming has been found to significantly increase dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and introduce new DOC molecular species. Approximately 58% of the DOC extracted from kelp mariculture area is recalcitrant DOC (RDOC), with 85% of these RDOC molecular species steadily present throughout long-term degradation. These findings highlight the importance of including stable RDOC in seaweed blue carbon budgets.

Spatial distribution of potentially harmful trace elements and ecological risk assessment in Zhanjiang mangrove wetland, South China

Kewei Zhao et al.

Summary: Global mangrove wetlands are increasingly impacted by human activities along the coast. This study focuses on the Zhanjiang mangrove wetland, the largest wetland adjacent to a highly developed bay area in China. Surface sediments were collected from different plant communities and analyzed for potentially harmful trace elements (PHTEs). The results show that most PHTEs were slightly enriched, with significant pollution of cadmium (Cd) and moderate potential ecological risk. The risk of the mangrove wetland is higher compared to grassland and farmland. The source of PHTEs is mainly attributed to local anthropogenic activities for mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb), natural geological processes for chromium (Cr), and atmospheric deposition of regional industrial pollution for Cd. The findings highlight the need for stricter implementation of wetland protection laws to achieve ecological civilization. This study provides valuable insights for wetland conservation and management in coastal cities.

Metals uptake and translocation in salt marsh macrophytes, Porteresia sp. from Bangladesh coastal area

M. Belal Hossain et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that salt marshes can be used for phytoremediation of metals, but research on salt marsh macrophytes in Bangladesh is lacking. This study evaluated metal uptake and translocation in Porteresia sp. from six salt marsh sites in Bangladesh. Results showed high metal accumulation in roots compared to shoots and leaves, with most metal concentrations below 1 in bioaccumulation concentration factor (BCF) except for Pb. Translocation factor (TF) indicated diverse metal mobility, with highest mobility observed for Mn and Pb. Regular trends among metals and sites were difficult to identify.
