Long-Lasting Zinc-Iodine Batteries with Ultrahigh Areal Capacity and Boosted Rate Capability Enabled by Nickel Single-Atom Electrocatalysts

Lianbo Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient electrocatalyst (NiSAs-HPC) was designed by uniformly dispersing Ni single atoms (NiSAs) on hierarchical porous carbon skeletons (HPC) to improve the electrochemical performance of Zn-I-2 batteries. The experimental results showed that the NiSAs-HPC catalyst significantly accelerated the conversion of soluble polyiodides (I-3(-) and I-5(-)). The resulting Zn-I-2 batteries exhibited exceptional rate capability and reliable capacity retention under high-rate conditions (50 C).

Carboxymethyl Chitosan-Modified Zinc Anode for High-Performance Zinc-Iodine Battery with Narrow Operating Voltage

Renjie Yi et al.

Summary: A cross-linked gel (Zn-CMCS) based on carboxymethyl chitosan is proposed as an artificial electrolyte interphase for zinc anode. The coating formed by crosslinking closely adheres to the surface of the zinc foil, providing toughness, ductility, and ideal electrochemical kinetics. By introducing adsorptive activated carbon on the cathode, the Zn-CMCS/AC-CFC battery exhibits greatly improved reversibility under long-cycling conditions.

Flexible PEDOT:PSS nanopapers as ?anion-cation regulation? synergistic interlayers enabling ultra-stable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a flexible, thin, and lightweight poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) nanopaper as an anion-cation regulation synergistic interlayer for aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries. The PEDOT:PSS interlayer with a 3D nanofibrous network and uniformly distributed mesopores effectively suppresses polyiodide shuttling and promotes dendrite-free zinc plating/stripping at high current densities and high areal capacities. The Zn-I2 batteries demonstrate high capacity and ultralong lifespan even at high current densities. This work highlights the potential of multifunctional interlayers for innovation in Zn-I2 battery configurations by synergistic regulation of cations and anions at the electrodes/electrolyte interface.

The key role of concentrated Zn(OTF)2 electrolyte in the performance of aqueous Zn-S batteries

Zhao Xu et al.

Summary: This communication systematically illustrates the electrolyte chemistry in aqueous Zn-S batteries. Compared to Zn(AC)(2) and ZnSO4, Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte shows better electrochemical performance due to the impact of larger CF3SO3- anions on the solvation shell structure of Zn2+. Moreover, a reversible capacity of 788 mA h g(-1) is obtained in concentrated Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte (3 M) with higher retention due to higher Zn-nucleation overpotential and slower corrosion reactions.

Summary: In this study, a four-electron aqueous zinc-iodine battery was developed by enhancing the iodine electrochemistry using a specially designed electrolyte. Experimental characterization and modeling showed that limited water activity and sufficient free chloride ions in the electrolyte are crucial for the four-electron process. The advantages of the electrolyte also help stabilize the zinc anode, leading to a high energy density and reliable cycling performance for the Zn-I-2 aqueous battery.
