Design and selective photocatalytic activity of highly concentrated C, N, O co-doped Zn, S co-defective ZnS particles mediated by ethylenediamine derivatives

Hojun Moon et al.

Summary: ZnS particles were synthesized with ethylenediamine (en) and its derivatives as capping agents, and the presence of Zn and S defects due to O, N-doping and loading of carbon dots (CDs) was confirmed. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra and density of states calculations suggested the degree of defects. The order of PL intensities and photocurrent densities were found to be ZnS-none > ZnS-EDTA > ZnS-en > ZnS-trien, with ZnS-trien showing extremely slow recombination of photo-excited charges. ZnS-trien was found to be the most suitable for CO2 reduction catalysis, while ZnS-en was the best for water-splitting. The study also revealed that ZnS-trien encapsulated with N-CDs shell maintained excellent photocatalytic activity without photo-corrosion over multiple recycling experiments.

Synergistic Effect of the Surface Vacancy Defects for Promoting Photocatalytic Stability and Activity of ZnS Nanoparticles

Bin Xiao et al.

Summary: Integration of abundant anion and cation vacancies on ZnS surface enhances the activity and stability of the photocatalyst, leading to an increased hydrogen production rate. Activated Zn atoms forming Zn-OH bonds are identified as the main active sites, while interactions in atomic orbitals at vacancy pairs and the introduction of V-Zn contribute to high stability. The optimal sample maintains a high hydrogen production rate after multiple cycles, demonstrating the potential for stable photocatalyst design.

Synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic activity of stannum-doped MgIn2S4 microspheres

Wenhong Yang et al.

Summary: The Sn2+ doped MgIn2S4 photocatalysts show significantly enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity compared to pristine MgIn2S4, with the highest yield achieved at a specific doping level. The theoretical results indicate that Sn doping alters the band structure, reduces band gap, extends light absorption range, and promotes migration of photoinduced carriers, while the experimental results demonstrate the positive role of Sn dopant in enhancing charge separation and transportation, as well as improving CO2 adsorption ability.
