Prediction and Modeling of Neuropsychological Scores in Alzheimer's Disease Using Multimodal Neuroimaging Data and Artificial Neural Networks

Seyed Hani Hojjati et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers aimed to predict neuropsychological scores and investigate the non-linear progression trend of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). They used multimodal neuroimaging data and a non-linear regression method to predict scores in a large number of subjects. The results showed that certain volumes and PET biomarkers outperformed other neuroimaging features in predicting the scores, and a bimodal approach improved prediction performance in different stages of AD and mild cognitive impairment.

Co-attentive multi-task convolutional neural network for facial expression recognition

Wenmeng Yu et al.

Summary: Previous research mainly focused on single-task or hard-parameter sharing based multi-task learning for Facial Expression Recognition (FER). This study explores new multi-task learning strategies by adopting Facial Landmark Detection (FLD) as the auxiliary task and proposes an end-to-end Co-attentive Multi-task Convolutional Neural Network (CMCNN). Extensive experimental results on benchmark databases show that CMCNN outperforms single-task and multi-task baselines, demonstrating the effectiveness and generalizability of multi-task learning.

Flexible link functions in a joint hierarchical Gaussian process model

Weiji Su et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel joint model to investigate the association between lung function decline and recurrent pulmonary exacerbation events more accurately. By using Gaussian processes and flexible link functions, the model improves fit to the data and characterizes the relationship between accelerated lung function decline and increased odds of experiencing another PE.

Confound modelling in UK Biobank brain imaging

Fidel Alfaro-Almagro et al.

Summary: Dealing with confounds is essential in large cohort studies to address unexplained variance and spurious correlations. The UK Biobank is a powerful resource for studying associations between imaging and non-imaging measures, but the high statistical power also increases sensitivity to confound effects. Researchers must carefully consider these factors.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a devastating neurodegenerative disease with limited treatment options. Modern technology allows for studying the disease but also presents challenges in data integration and analysis. Machine learning methods can address high dimensional data, integrate data from different sources, and discover new biomarkers, potentially aiding in the development of treatment strategies.
