Forecasting stock market volatility with various geopolitical risks categories: New evidence from machine learning models

Zibo Niu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of geopolitical risks on the prediction performance of US stock market volatility using machine learning models. It also compares the predictive performance of individual and combination forecast methods. The SHAP algorithm is used to identify the factors that have a significant impact on predicting geopolitical risks. The results show that military build-ups and escalation of war are important factors in predicting realized volatility. The paper highlights the superior performance of machine learning and forecast combination methods, particularly SVR method and trimmed mean combination. Additionally, by allocating portfolio based on machine learning-based volatility forecasts, investors can achieve significant financial benefits, especially using elastic net and random forest.

Comparison of HP Filter and the Hamilton's Regression

Melina Dritsaki et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of using Hamilton's regression filter compared to Hodrick-Prescott double filter on the cyclical components of Greece's unemployment rate. The study finds that Hamilton's filter results in larger cycle volatilities, and the dynamic forecasting of the HP filter is better than that of Hamilton's.

A Power Booster Factor for Out-of-Sample Tests of Predictability

Pablo Pincheira Brown

Summary: In this paper, a power booster factor for out-of-sample tests of predictability is introduced. The focus is on the widely used test developed by Clark and West, and Monte Carlo simulations are used to explore the size and power of the new test. The results indicate that the new test is well sized and powerful, and it has important applications in evaluating the ability of predicting core inflation.

Stock market return predictability: A combination forecast perspective

Wendai Lv et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the predictability of stock market returns based on traditional macroeconomic variables. The empirical results suggest that the mean combination forecast model outperforms other models in forecasting stock market returns, and its performance remains robust across different forecasting windows, market conditions, and multi-step-ahead forecasts. Importantly, the mean combination forecast consistently generates higher CER gains compared to other models, considering different investors' risk aversion coefficients and trading costs.
