Wild carnivores and Thelazia callipaeda zoonotic eyeworms: A focus on wolves

Marcos Antonio Bezerra-Santos et al.

Summary: Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic parasite that causes ocular disease in various animals, including humans. This study found that wolves in Europe may act as reservoirs and spreaders of T. callipaeda. The first detection of T. callipaeda eyeworms in grey wolves in the Italian Alps suggests a possible ecological continuity for the distribution of this parasite.

Longitudinal dynamics and health impact of Hepatozoon procyonis (Apicomplexa: Hepatozoidae) on naturally infected ring-tailed coatis Nasua nasua (Carnivora: Procyonidae) from Midwestern Brazil

L. Perles et al.

Summary: This study detected Hepatozoon procyonis in coatis' blood and ticks, and evaluated its impact on blood parameters and coatis' health. The results showed a high prevalence of the parasite in coatis, but no noticeable alteration in their health and blood parameters.

Dirofilaria repens microfilaremia in humans: Case description and literature review

Ana Pupic Bakrac et al.

Summary: The study detected multiple adults of D. repens, endosymbiont Wolbachia sp. and microfilariae in the peripheral tissues and bloodstream of a human host, suggesting humans may act as a final host for D. repens, but its role as a source of D. repens infection is less clear.

Wolbachia: endosymbiont of onchocercid nematodes and their vectors

Ranju Ravindran Santhakumari Manoj et al.

Summary: Wolbachia plays a significant role in host biology, immunity, ecology and evolution, reproduction, endosymbiont-based treatment, and control strategies for onchocercid nematodes. It offers new approaches for the control of various vector-borne diseases of medical and veterinary importance.
