Robust Symbol-Level Precoding and Passive Beamforming for IRS-Aided Communications

Guangyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates joint beamforming design in a multiuser MISO communication network aided with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Symbol-level precoding (SLP) is adopted to enhance system performance by considering multiuser interference (MUI) and bounded channel uncertainty. Two algorithms based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and alternating optimization (AO) methods are proposed and compared for the single-user case. The AO-based algorithm shows lower computational complexity with similar power compared to the SDR-based algorithm. The AO technique is then applied to the multiuser case and an algorithm based on the proximal gradient descent (PGD) method is developed. Numerical results demonstrate that SLP can significantly improve system performance and 3-bit phase shifters can achieve near-optimal power performance.

Multiple RISs Assisted Cell-Free Networks With Two-Timescale CSI: Performance Analysis and System Design

Xu Gan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a low-complexity algorithm for cell-free systems with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). It employs a two-timescale transmission protocol to maximize the average weighted sum-rate by jointly optimizing the beamforming at base stations (BSs) and RISs. The algorithm achieves optimization of passive beamformers at RISs using statistical channel state information (CSI), and transmit beamformers at BSs using instantaneous CSI. The results show that the algorithm's performance with two-timescale CSI is comparable to that with instantaneous CSI in low or moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.

Unified IRS-Aided MIMO Transceiver Designs via Majorization Theory

Shiqi Gong et al.

Summary: This paper develops a unified framework for IRS-aided transceiver designs in MIMO systems under general power constraints and investigates two classes of performance criteria using majorization theory. The optimal transceiver design is simplified and solved using Pareto optimization theory and Lagrange duality, with a solution attained through the modified subgradient method. Further analysis shows that optimal nonlinear THP (DFE) designs are essentially linear precoding (equalization) for Schur-concave objectives, while Schur-convex objectives result in equal MSEs for individual data streams. Based on these conclusions, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm and two-stage scheme are proposed, with numerical results demonstrating their global optimality and excellent performance.
