Soft and lightweight fabric enables powerful and high- range pneumatic actuation

Zhuang Zhang et al.

Summary: Soft and less stretchable fabric-based pneumatic actuators are introduced in this article, which possess tunable workspace and high payload capability. The actuators have programmable, combinable, and predictable motion modes, with rapid response to low input pressure. A robotic gripper utilizing three fabric actuators is also presented, demonstrating a grasping force of over 150 N and a grasping range from 70 to 350 millimeters. These design concepts and guidelines provide foundations for applying less stretchable yet soft materials in soft robots to enhance their practicality.

Plug & play origami modules with all-purpose deformation modes

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an origami actuation module based on a modified Kresling pattern with pneumatically-driven pouches is proposed, enabling seven motion modes in one module. The module offers all-purpose deformation modes, including three decoupled basic motion types and four combinations of these types, which can be precisely controlled through various pressurization schemes. These origami-based modules with all-purpose deformation modes offer unprecedented opportunities for soft robots to perform complex tasks.

Design and analysis of hybrid-driven origami continuum robots with extensible and stiffness-tunable sections

Zhuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design and analysis of a tendon-driven continuum robot without an elastic backbone, which exhibits high extension ratio, low input pressure, and no radial expansion. The kinetostatics modeling and analysis are developed to predict the motion behavior and control the proposed robot. A prototype is built to validate the design principle and modeling method, showing acceptable positioning accuracy and adjustable structural stiffness.

Morphing Origami Block for Lightweight Reconfigurable System

Sa-Reum Kim et al.

Summary: The article introduces a three-dimensional shape-shifting system that addresses the stability issue of shape memory alloy wire actuators by tuning the structural characteristics of morphing origami blocks. This cooperative scheme enhances the reversibility and stability of the shape-shifting system, enabling rapid transformation with high degrees of freedom, unlike existing programmable origami. As a stand-alone transformation unit, the morphing block equipped with deployable mechanisms and actuators weighs 6 g, has a volume change factor of ten, can complete transformation in less than 5 s in both directions, and can carry more than 120 g of payload in the deployed state.
