Competitive adsorption of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by vermiculite-alginate composite: batch and fixed-bed column studies

Ebrahim Allahkarami et al.

Summary: This study introduces a low-cost adsorbent, vermiculite-Alginic composite (VMT-ALG), for the uptake of Ni(II) and Cu(II). The composite was characterized and various process parameters were optimized. The experimental data showed that the Freundlich adsorption model was the best isotherm model for describing the adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) by VMT-ALG. Kinetic studies indicated that intra-particle diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the adsorption process. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was physisorption and endothermic. Fixed-bed column studies were conducted under different flow rates and initial concentrations, and the results were successfully explained using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. Continuous adsorption studies indicated that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Ni(II) increased with an increase in the concentration of metal ions and decreased with an increase in the flow rate.

Toward a mechanistic understanding of adsorption behavior of phenol onto a novel activated carbon composite

Esmaeil Allahkarami et al.

Summary: The solid-liquid adsorption systems for MSAC (PbFe2O4 spinel-activated carbon)-phenol and pristine activated carbon-phenol were studied thermodynamically and from the viewpoint of statistical physics. Experimental results showed that MSAC composite had better performance in phenol uptake from waste streams compared to pristine AC. Increasing temperature led to a decrease in the adsorbed amount of phenol on both MSAC composite and pristine AC. Thermodynamic evaluations indicated that the adsorption process of MSAC was spontaneous and exothermic, while for pristine AC it was non-spontaneous. Statistical physics modeling revealed that the single-layer model with one energy was the best to describe the experimental data for both adsorbents. The adsorption energies of phenol on both adsorbents were relatively small, indicating physical interactions. Mechanistic studies confirmed the significant role of metallic hydroxides in MSAC in facilitating the removal of phenol through strong interaction with phenol molecules, compared to pristine activated carbon.

Synthesis of sodium alginate/carboxy-methyl cellulose/Cu-based metal-organic framework composite for adsorption of tetracycline from aqueous solution: Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic approach

Atefeh Ehsani et al.

Summary: Sodium alginate/carboxy-methyl cellulose/Cu-based metal-organic framework (SA/CMC/Cu-BDC) nano-composite beads were prepared and characterized. The composite beads exhibited high surface area and showed promising adsorption capacity for Tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. The adsorption process followed Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamical analysis suggested that the adsorption of TC onto the composite beads was spontaneous and endothermic. The interactions of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and 7C-7C played significant roles in the adsorption process.

State-of-art advances on removal, degradation and electrochemical monitoring of 4-aminophenol pollutants in real samples: A review

Hassan Karimi-Maleh et al.

Summary: p_Aminophenol, also known as 4-aminophenol (4-AP), is a chemical compound with hydroxyl and amino groups on the benzene ring. It is a suitable precursor for synthesizing oxazoles and oxazines. However, the toxicity of aniline and phenol poses a risk to human and environmental health, so it is important to develop reliable techniques for detecting and eliminating trace amounts of amino phenols.

Esmaeil Allahkarami et al.

Summary: In this study, fixed-bed experiments were conducted using a novel Pb-Fe spinel-activated carbon adsorbent for phenol uptake from water. The adsorbent was characterized and compared to pristine activated carbon. The results showed that the Pb-Fe spinel-activated carbon composite had a higher adsorption capacity and was suitable for fixed-bed adsorption of phenol.

Facile Synthesis of Sustainable Tannin/Sodium Alginate Composite Hydrogel Beads for Efficient Removal of Methylene Blue

Jie Gao et al.

Summary: Bio-based adsorbents were developed to remove dye contaminants for sustainable development. Aromatic bio-based tannin was incorporated into pure sodium alginate adsorbent to enhance its adsorption capacity. The Tan/SA composite hydrogel beads showed millimeter-sized beads with enhanced thermal stability. The 40% Tan/SA adsorbents achieved a maximum capacity of 247.2 mg/g at optimal conditions (pH = 12, T = 45 degrees C) with a removal efficiency of 82.4%. The adsorption process was endothermic and showed chemical adsorption, with a removal efficiency exceeding 90% after five cycles.
