Tuning the Electronic Structure of Cobalt Selenide on Copper Foam by Introducing a Ni Buffer Layer for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting

Manisha Das et al.

Summary: Developing a cost-effective, highly competent, and durable bifunctional electrocatalyst is crucial for water splitting to produce H-2 fuel as a renewable energy technology. The combination of three-dimensional porous copper foam and transition metal selenide has shown remarkable performance in water electrolysis. Introducing a nickel buffer layer between copper foam and cobalt selenide enhances electron transfer without compromising overall material conductivity, resulting in improved efficiency, activity, and stability of the catalyst. This synthesized catalyst material has the potential to replace conventional fossil fuel-based energy systems for large-scale hydrogen production.

Shun-Xing Liang et al.

Summary: The study explores the development of heterostructured catalysts through rapid annealing of Fe-based metallic glasses and subsequent ball milling, which enables more chemically active sites due to its specific surface area, surface defects, and nanosized amorphous oxide layer, enhancing surface-catalyzed reactions in the Fenton-like process. The high efficiency of electron transfer in heterostructured catalysts is further facilitated by high-temperature annealing inducing grain growth and the electrochemical potential difference induced effect of galvanic cells in multiple crystalline phases.
