Visible-light-driven benzyl alcohol oxidation over Pt/Mn-Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets: Structure-function relationship of multicomponent photocatalysts

Yingzhang Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, Pt nanoparticles modified Mn doped Bi4Ti3O12 ultrathin nanosheets (Pt/MnNS) were constructed as a surface functionalized photocatalyst for visible-light-driven selective benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation. Among them, Pt/5MnNS showed the best performance with a benzaldehyde (BD) yield rate of 1180 μmol·g-1·h-1 and a selectivity of 99.9%. Experimental results revealed that Mn doping extended the optical absorption range of the photocatalyst to the visible region and induced the formation of more surface Ti4+d atoms. These Ti4+d atoms served as stronger Lewis acid centers, achieving more prominent adsorption and activation of BA, making it easier to deprotonate BA by photogenerated holes. Meanwhile, Pt nanoparticles significantly promoted the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, supporting the formation of superoxide and carbon-centered radicals. Thus, the photocatalytic BA oxidation efficiency was markedly improved by surface multicomponent synergistic effect.

One-step fabrication of Cu-doped Bi2MoO6 microflower for enhancing performance in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Junfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study enhances the photocatalytic N2 immobilization performance of Bi2MoO6 through Cu doping. The doped Cu element substitutes the position of Bi3+ and influences the energy band structure of Bi2MoO6. Cu doping narrows the band gap and raises the conduction band, generating more electrons with stronger reducibility. Cu doping also reduces work function and improves charge separation efficiency, leading to enhanced photoactivity. Cu-Bi2MoO6 exhibits higher capability in the adsorption and activation of N2, resulting in considerably higher photocatalytic efficiency compared to Bi2MoO6.

Thorny hydrangea-like SnIn4S8/Mn0.3Cd0.7S as novel type-II heterojunction photocatalyst to enhance the efficient degradation of imidacloprid

Xue Jiang et al.

Summary: The construction of type-II heterojunction structure effectively enhances the separation of electron-hole pairs in photocatalysts. A series of SnIn4S8/Mn0.3Cd0.7S (SIS/MCS) heterostructure photocatalysts were prepared using an in-situ growth method and tested for their photodegradation efficiencies of imidacloprid. The SIS/MCS-10 showed significantly improved photocatalytic degradation performance, mainly due to the formation of a type-II junction, inhibiting the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhancing the photocatalytic degradation rate. The stability and influences of interfering anions and water matrices on the SIS/MCS were also studied.

Greatly boosted photocatalytic N2-to-NH3 conversion by bismuth doping in CdMoO4: Band structure engineering and N2 adsorption modification

Junfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This work enhances the photocatalytic N2 immobilization performance of CdMoO4 through Bi doping, which reduces the particle size and narrows the band gap. The Bi-doped CdMoO4 exhibits a stronger ability in generating and separating charge carriers than CdMoO4. N2 has stronger adsorption at the unsaturated Mo sites of Bi-doped CdMoO4 due to the interactions between the 2 pi* orbital of N2 with the d orbital of Mo, leading to excellent photocatalytic N2-to-NH3 performance.

Summary: This study designed and synthesized a novel composite photocatalyst of Bi2O3/CdMoO4 using a deposition-oxidation method. It investigated the morphology, specific surface area, structure, optical properties, and photoelectric chemical properties of the Bi2O3/CdMoO4 composite. The results showed that the dispersion of Bi2O3 nanoparticles on the surface of CdMoO4 polymers increased light absorption and facilitated the photocatalytic reaction. The presence of a tight contact between CdMoO4 and Bi2O3 resulted in the formation of a heterojunction structure, promoting the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs through an S-scheme mechanism.
