Network pharmacology: curing causal mechanisms instead of treating symptoms

Cristian Nogales et al.

Summary: For complex diseases, the traditional approach of drug discovery is highly ineffective. The shift towards systems and network medicine, along with the use of network pharmacology, revolutionizes the way we define, diagnose, and treat diseases. This approach focuses on causal, multitarget signaling modules, allowing for precise and effective therapeutic intervention through drug repurposing.

Chronic bronchitis and emphysema among workers exposed to dust, vapors, or fumes by industry and occupation

Brent Doney et al.

Summary: The study found that workplace exposures may be associated with high prevalence of chronic bronchitis and emphysema in certain industry and occupational groups. Early diagnosis and identifying associated workplace exposures are important steps in preventing chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Qualitative and quantitative analyses of chemical components of Citri Sarcodactylis Fructus from different origins based on UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS and GC-MS

Jinrong Ning et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of Citri Sarcodactylis Fructus (CSF) from different origins. The study identified multiple major components in CSF, with 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin and stachydrine being the highest in content and suggested as key components for quality analysis. Additionally, characteristic compounds were found to distinguish different CSF samples.

Effect of low VEGF on lung development and function

May Zun Zaw Myint et al.

Summary: This study established a lung-specific and reversible VEGF repression mouse model by using the human SPC promoter and doxycycline-regulated transcription repression protein, reducing lung VEGF expression and mimicking abnormal VEGF levels in the lung. The model demonstrated significant impacts on lung development and structure under low VEGF levels, highlighting the regulatory roles of epithelial expressed VEGF in lung development and function.

Investigation of the content differences of arachidonic acid metabolites in a mouse model of breast cancer by using LC-MS/MS

Ang Chen et al.

Summary: Arachidonic acid plays a crucial role in breast cancer, and its metabolic pathways have the potential to kill cancer cells and inhibit the tumor microenvironment. By analyzing the concentrations of AA and its main metabolites in a breast cancer mouse model, new biomarkers for breast cancer diagnosis may be identified.

The mechanism and candidate compounds of aged citrus peel (chenpi) preventing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and its progression to lung cancer

Lin Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that the main active components of chenpi (nobiletin, naringenin, hesperetin) regulate five core targets (AKT1, TP53, IL6, VEGFA, MMP9), can prevent COPD and its progression to lung cancer by being involved in the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and MAPK signaling pathway. Molecular docking indicated that hesperetin had better binding activity for core targets. In mouse lung cancer with COPD, treatment with hesperetin dose-dependently improved lung tissue injury in COPD, suppressed the protein expression of AKT1, IL6, VEGFA, MMP9, and up-regulated the protein expression of TP53.

Arachidonic Acid 15-Lipoxygenase: Effects of Its Expression, Metabolites, and Genetic and Epigenetic Variations on Airway Inflammation

Xu Xu et al.

Summary: ALOX15 is an important enzyme involved in airway inflammatory diseases, playing a role in promoting inflammation, immune cell migration, and airway remodeling. Variants and epigenetic modifications of the ALOX15 gene are closely correlated with the risk of developing airway diseases. The study suggests new treatment strategies for airway inflammatory diseases with complex etiology and poor treatment response.
