Recurrent but not single report of fear of falling predicts cognitive decline in community-residing older adults

Associations Between Changes in Depression/Anxiety Symptoms and Fall Worry Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Namkee G. Choi et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between fall worry and changes in depression/anxiety symptoms among older adults. The results show that those with fall worry have higher rates of depression/anxiety symptoms and an increase in symptoms over time. The study suggests the need for screening for both depression/anxiety and fall worry in older adults and the implementation of effective psychosocial and behavioral interventions.

Association of fear of falling with cognitive function and physical activity in older community-dwelling adults

Hiroyuki Umegaki et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the association between fear of falling and physical activity independent of cognitive decline in older adults. Findings showed that older adults with high fear of falling had declined cognitive speed and performed less moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity with fewer steps. This suggests that fear of falling may be linked to decreased physical activity in older adults.
