The new paradigm of economic complexity

Pierre-Alexandre Balland et al.

Summary: Economic complexity is a powerful paradigm for understanding key societal issues and challenges. It analyzes the interactions within an economy to grasp various socioeconomic processes. This emerging field relies on big data and machine learning techniques and has gained recognition from international institutions. Economic integration and economic complexity: The role of basic resources in absorptive capability in 40 selected developing countries

Canh Phuc Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study found that trade openness has a positive impact on economic complexity, while FDI inflows have a negative impact. Human capital accelerates the effect of trade openness, but does not have a catalytic role in the effect of FDI inflows. The development of the Internet serves as a new and important resource that boosts the positive impact of trade openness and turns negative impact of FDI inflows to positive. Reducing energy poverty and developing Internet seem to be good policies for enabling developing countries to absorb spillovers from economic integration.

Participation in global value chains and varieties of development patterns

Bruno Carballa Smichowski et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the relationship between participation in global value chains (GVCs) and development patterns at the country level. Through cross-country analysis for 51 countries between 1995 and 2008, it identifies three patterns of socio-economic development related to various degrees and modes of GVC participation: a social upgrading mirage, the reproduction of the core, and unequal growth.
