Circular economy and efficiency to ensure the sustainability in the wastewater treatment plants

Vicent Hernandez-Chover et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have great potential in the circular economy as they can provide alternative water sources and valuable resources for other sectors. Evaluating the efficiency of wastewater treatment processes helps identify ways to improve performance and ensure long-term sustainability. The study introduces an advanced efficiency model that differentiates between mandatory pollutant removal and additional removal, showing that most facilities can remove more pollutants and generate more resources for society.

Recovering ammonium by treated and untreated zeolitic mixtures: A comprehensive experimental and modelling study

Sofia Maria Muscarella et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the physical-chemical properties of NH4+ adsorption from aqueous solution by two zeolitic mixtures, one treated with NaCl and one untreated. The zeolitic mixture richer in mordenite and with high specific surface area adsorbed more NH4+ than the one richer in clinoptilolite and heulandite with a lower specific surface area. NaCl treatment increased the amount of NH4+ adsorbed by the zeolitic mixtures. The results suggest that modulation of NaCl treatment of zeolitic mixtures can be applied to obtain new materials for water remediation from NH4+ contamination.

Simultaneous recovery of nutrients and water from human urine by a novel thermally activated peroxydisulfate and membrane distillation integrated system

Yaping Lyu et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel system, named thermally activated peroxydisulfate with membrane distillation (TAP-MD), to overcome the limitations of membrane distillation in urine treatment. TAP pretreatment alleviated membrane fouling and improved the performance of membrane distillation. The MD process further enhanced urine stability, minimized nutrient losses, and produced high-quality reclaimed water.

Efficient NH3-N recovery from municipal wastewaters via membrane hybrid systems: Nutrient-Energy-Water (NEW) nexus in circular economy

Mahdi Sheikh et al.

Summary: In the worldwide context, traditional wastewater treatment technologies face challenges in removing ammonia (NH3) from municipal/domestic wastewater, which is vital for a sustainable nitrogen cycle. The focus on climate change has led to the pursuit of scientific solutions in NH3 production to reduce carbon footprint. Membrane Hybrid Systems (MHS), as sustainable alternatives, can effectively remove/recover valuable resources and generate revenue, facilitating the transition towards advanced treatment plants in the circular economy. This comprehensive review discusses the factors affecting NH3 recovery from wastewater and the development of membrane hybrid technologies in terms of economic viability, sustainability, and technical feasibility.

Ammonia recovery from municipal wastewater using hybrid NaOH closed-loop membrane contactor and ion exchange system

M. Sheikh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the integration of ion exchange-natural activated clinoptilolite zeolite (IEX-NZ) and hollow-fibre liquid-liquid membrane contactor (HF-LLMC) for ammonia recovery from treated urban wastewaters. The process is based on NaOH closed-loop process to ensure the extracted concentration of ammonia from the loaded zeolites and enhance the transport of NH3 through the HF-LLMC. A 1-D model was developed to describe the time evolution of NH3 concentration during the recovery process and to analyze the operational parameters to maximize the concentration of the recovered ammonium salts.

Life cycle sustainability assessment of advanced treatment techniques for urban wastewater reuse and sewage sludge resource recovery

Raphael Ricardo Zepon Tarpani et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants can contribute to sustainable development and a transition to a circular economy by generating valuable resources through advanced treatment techniques. In this paper, a life cycle sustainability assessment is conducted to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social aspects of these techniques. The results show that nanofiltration is the most sustainable option for advanced wastewater treatment, while agricultural application of sludge is the most sustainable technique for resource recovery.

Liquid-Liquid membrane contactors incorporating surface skin asymmetric hollow fibres of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) for ammonium recovery as liquid fertilisers

M. Sheikh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated two novel hollow-fibre liquid-liquid membrane contactor modules, with S-type fibres performing well in ammonia recovery and Q-type fibres producing more concentrated liquid fertiliser. The stability of the membrane contactor under acidic and basic conditions was monitored using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and two-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy.

Hospital effluent guidelines and legislation scenario around the globe: A critical review

Nadeem A. Khan et al.

Summary: Laboratories, dialysis units, and similar facilities in healthcare institutions contribute significantly to wastewater pollution, containing hazardous pollutants such as pharmaceutical residues and pathogens. Despite the high risks posed to the environment and public health, there is a lack of legal requirements for ensuring the safety of hospital effluents. It is crucial to strengthen legislative regulations and high-quality treatment for medical institution wastewater.
