Targeted nano-sized drug delivery to heterogeneous solid tumor microvasculatures: Implications for immunoliposomes exhibiting bystander killing effect

Mohammad Amin Abazari et al.

Summary: This study developed a computational framework to evaluate the treatment efficacy of free Doxorubicin (Dox) and immunoliposome at different stages of vascular solid tumors. The results showed that immunoliposomes exhibited higher drug internalization and fusion effect during therapy, leading to more homogeneous drug distribution and a greater fraction of killed cancer cells.

Ultrasound-mediated nano drug delivery for treating cancer: Fundamental physics to future directions

Farshad Moradi Kashkooli et al.

Summary: The application of biocompatible nanocarriers in medicine has provided several benefits over conventional treatment methods. Therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) has shown potential in both standalone anticancer treatment and targeted drug release. By combining nanomedicine and ultrasound as a smart drug delivery system (DDS), it is possible to enhance in situ drug delivery, improve access to impermeable tissues, and achieve targeted drug release. However, further research and clinical trials are needed to understand the physical mechanisms and interactions involved and to overcome the challenges in advancing TUS as an efficient and safe cancer treatment.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Interstitial fluid pressure as an emerging biomarker in solid tumors

Hooman Salavati et al.

Summary: Elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) in the physical microenvironment of cancer is a negative predictive and prognostic factor, directly impacting malignant behavior and therapy response. Recent advancements in dynamic and functional imaging methods, as well as numerical modeling and simulation, enable comprehensive assessment of the biomechanical landscape of cancer and help overcome physical barriers.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
