Analysis on the influence of crack structure on MPL transmission properties

Junbiao Dai et al.

Summary: Microcracks in the micro porous layer (MPL) have a significant impact on the transport properties of liquid water and gas. A 3D MPL model was developed, and cracks at different depths and horizontal inclination angles were added to simulate the liquid water transport process. The study showed that liquid water flows at a higher velocity in the cracks and larger interconnected gaps in the MPL. The permeability of the MPL without cracks is 34.7% higher than the average permeability of the MPL with cracks at different depths. The permeability is also influenced by the location of the cracks and varies with the crack depth and horizontal inclination angle.

Optimal design of a cathode flow field for performance enhancement of PEM fuel cell

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: Flow field design optimization is crucial for enhancing the performance of PEMFC by improving mass transfer and water removal capacity. A 3D, two-phase, isothermal numerical model is used to evaluate the performance of an optimized cathode flow field, and the results are validated through visualization experiments. It is found that the opposite sinusoidal wave flow fields with different inlet configurations provide significant performance enhancement compared to parallel flow fields. The dual-inlet flow field with a block design shows the highest performance enhancement of 9.30% at 2.2 A cm-2. The Pearson correlation coefficient is introduced to evaluate the correlation between each index and PEMFC performance, and it is confirmed to be applicable in PEMFC.

Current density and temperature distribution measurement and homogeneity analysis for a large-area proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Tianwei Miao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the local current density (LCD) and temperature distributions of a PEMFC with different cathode flow fields, and introduces a homogeneity parameter to evaluate the uniformity of LCD distribution. Results show that the cell with dot-parallel flow field performs better in terms of performance and LCD distribution uniformity. Temperature distribution is generally positively correlated with LCD distribution. Increasing cathode stoichiometry can effectively improve LCD distribution uniformity and mitigate local oxygen starvation at high loads.

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This article investigates the use of multi-sub-inlet designs on the cathode flow-field plate of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell to improve current density uniformity and overall cell performance. The results show that compared to conventional designs, the multi-sub-inlet design can improve oxygen distribution, enhance water removal capacity, and maintain a low pressure drop, leading to improved cell performance. Additionally, increasing the flow rate of the sub-inlets can further enhance the maximum power density while maintaining oxygen distribution uniformity.

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of polytetrafluoroethylene content and distribution on liquid transport behaviors in gas diffusion layers and the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells was investigated. The results indicate that an increased content of polytetrafluoroethylene favors liquid removal, but an extremely high content could weaken cell performance. Additionally, a reasonably higher polytetrafluoroethylene content in the inlet region of the gas diffusion layer benefits water drainage enhancement.
