Effect of microstructure and temperature on nuclear graphite oxidation using the 3D Random Pore Model

Ryan M. Paul et al.

Summary: This work compared experimental and characterization data with the 3D Random Pore Model (3D-RPM) to study the effect of nuclear graphite microstructure and air oxidation temperature. The study revealed that the distribution of open porosity plays a crucial role in oxidation rate, with more uniform distribution leading to faster oxidation.

Sulfamic acid supported on mesoporous MCM-41 as a novel, efficient and reusable heterogenous solid acid catalyst for synthesis of xanthene, dihydropyrimidinone and coumarin derivatives

Reda S. Salama et al.

Summary: In this study, incorporation of sulfamic acid (SA) into mesoporous silica (MCM-41) was successfully achieved to prepare SA/MCM-41 composites with different weight content of SA. The composites were characterized using various techniques and displayed excellent performance in multicomponent reactions. The acidic strength of the composites improved progressively with increasing SA content, leading to high catalytic efficiency without significant loss in performance upon reuse.

Probing basal planes and edge sites in polygranular nuclear graphite by gas adsorption: Estimation of active surface area

Nidia C. Gallego et al.

Summary: Graphite with polygranular structure shows similar gas adsorption behavior to graphitized carbon blacks, indicating the presence of energetically homogeneous basal planes domains in graphite porosity. Quantifying the basal plane area of different polygranular graphite types and correlating it with their microstructure allows for a reliable estimation of the active surface area of graphite using gas adsorption. Direct estimation based on gas adsorption is preferred over indirect calculations based on microstructural information.
