High-efficiency overall alkaline seawater splitting: using a nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array as a bifunctional electrocatalyst

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The use of nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array on nickel foam as a bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates high-performance and cost-effective electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production. It delivers a current density of 500 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of 300 and 347 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater respectively. Moreover, it only requires a cell voltage of 1.85 V to drive 500 mA cm(-2) in a two-electrode electrolyzer, and shows strong stability for at least 50 hours of electrolysis in alkaline seawater, outperforming recently reported catalyst electrodes for seawater splitting.

Rational Design of Transition Metal Phosphide-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: Developing efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for the commercial viability of electrochemical clean energy technologies. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been recognized as attractive HER catalytic materials due to their abundant reserves, unique structure, tunable composition, and high electronic conductivity. However, the HER activity of TMPs is still limited by various issues and performance bottlenecks. This review addresses these issues, provides explanations and solutions based on the origins of HER catalytic activity in TMPs, presents strategies to improve HER performance, and proposes critical scientific issues for constructing high-efficiency TMP-based electrocatalysts. Challenges and future directions for this research field, including the HER reaction process, catalytic mechanism research, TMP-based catalyst construction, and application expansion, are also discussed.

Key components and design strategy of the membrane electrode assembly for alkaline water electrolysis

Lei Wan et al.

Summary: Alkaline water electrolysis is a promising method to address the energy crisis, and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) play a crucial role in determining the performance and durability of this process. Therefore, developing high-performance and low-cost MEAs is essential for promoting large-scale applications of alkaline water electrolysis. In this review, we discuss the state-of-the-art MEAs, including electrocatalysts, ion conductive membranes, and gas/liquid diffusion layers, as well as the progress in their preparation technologies. We also highlight the complex relationship between the electrocatalyst and main components with the performance of alkaline water electrolysis, and discuss the current challenges and future perspectives on MEA development.
