Photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole using TiO2-based materials - Perspectives for the development of a sustainable water treatment technology

Joanna Musial et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide-based materials is a promising solution to water pollution. However, the research often remains confined to the laboratory due to the limitations of the developed materials and photodegradation conditions. This paper collects and compares studies on the photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole to find the best approaches for industrial application. Factors such as different types of TiO2-based photocatalysts, irradiation sources, and water matrices are considered, along with the stability and reusability of the photocatalyst and the identification of intermediate products and toxicity assays.

Summary: Developing efficient photocatalysts for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants is a challenging task. In this study, hierarchical S-scheme heterostructured photocatalysts were successfully prepared and demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic activities in the synchronous removal of Cr(VI) and TC. The enhanced photocatalytic activities were attributed to the hierarchical structure and S-scheme migration mechanism, which promoted the separation and utilization efficiency of photoinduced electrons and holes.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of toluene pollution using CuO/TiO2 composites. The composites synthesized by the wet precipitation method showed better performance and durability, with higher light absorption and lower charge recombination. Under ultraviolet-visible light, the light-driven heat significantly increased the removal efficiency, and the addition of infrared light further improved the efficiency. The reduction of carbon deposition greatly improved the photocatalytic performance and stability of the materials.
