α-Pinene: A never-ending story

Martina Allenspach et al.

Summary: Alpha-pinene, a monoterpene found in higher plants, has been historically used for treating respiratory tract infections and is essential in the fragrance and flavor industry. Recent research focuses on synthesizing new compounds with pharmacological and herbicidal activities based on the alpha-pinene core, as well as investigating the enantioselective activities of alpha-pinene. Furthermore, approaches for authenticity control of essential oils based on their enantiomeric profile are also discussed.

Cancer Chemopreventive Role of Dietary Terpenoids by Modulating Keap1-Nrf2-ARE Signaling System-A Comprehensive Update

Md Afjalus Siraj et al.

Summary: ROS, RNS, and carcinogenic metabolites can create excessive oxidative stress, leading to epigenetic modifications and cancer initiation. The transcription factor Nrf2 is activated in response to cellular stress and regulates redox homeostasis by expressing cytoprotective enzymes. Dietary nutraceuticals from fruits, vegetables, and spices may have cancer chemopreventive effects by inducing Nrf2-mediated detoxifying enzymes.

Roflumilast protects from cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity in male rats and enhances its cytotoxicity in prostate cancer cell line. Role of NF-κB-p65, cAMP/PKA and Nrf2/HO-1, NQO1 signaling

Basel A. Abdel-Wahab et al.

Summary: The study found that ROF can reverse CIS-induced abnormalities in sperm characteristics, normalize serum testosterone level, and improve testicular and epidydimal weights, as well as restore normal testicular structure. ROF also increases intracellular cAMP level, PKA and HO-1 activities, Nrf2, NQO-1 and HO-1 gene expression, improves testicular oxidative stress parameters and inflammatory mediators, and reduces proapoptotic proteins' expression. In addition, ROF enhances the anticancer efficacy of CIS, induces Nrf2, HO-1, NQO-1 gene expression, inhibits NF-kappa beta p65 gene expression induced by CIS, and enhances its apoptotic effect in PC3 cells.
