Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of vapor assembly sequence and assembly temperature on the corrosion protection of complex silane films on Al alloy was studied. The performance and application range of silane films were improved. Electrochemical measurements and alkaline solution accelerated corrosion test were used to investigate the corrosion protection of the assembly films. Thickness and hydrophobicity of the complex films were studied using ellipsometric spectroscopy and contact angle tests.

On the localized corrosion of AA5083 in a simulated dynamic seawater/air interface-Part 1: Corrosion initiation mechanism

Da-Hai Xia et al.

Summary: Localized corrosion of aluminium alloy AA5083-H111 was studied in both a simulated dynamic seawater/air interfacial zone and a full seawater immersion zone using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise. Investigation of Al-Fe/Ti intermetallic particles (IMPs) on localized corrosion was conducted with focused ion beam, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Compared to the full immersion zone, the interfacial zone exhibited higher oxide film resistance and charge transfer resistance, attributed to the elevated oxygen flux in that zone. The localized corrosion was found to originate from IMPs containing an Al-Fe phase and a Ti enriched phase.

Identifying the cavitation erosion stages of AA5083 by electrochemical noise analyses

Yesen Zhu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to study the cavitation erosion stages of AA5083 by using electrochemical noise (EN). EN technology including noise resistance and fast Fourier transform were used to characterize the electrochemical process during the cavitation erosion process. The findings show that AA5083 suffers from uniform corrosion during the cavitation erosion process, which can be divided into three stages: incubation stage, acceleration stage and steady-state stage. EN signals showed obvious differences in different stages of cavitation erosion. The originality and value of this study lie in the suitability of EN technique for studying cavitation erosion mechanism and identifying cavitation erosion stages.

Galvanic corrosion of AA5052/304SS welded joint with Zn-based filler metal in marine engineering

Yueting Ma et al.

Summary: The galvanic corrosion and localized corrosion behavior of AA5052/weld seam/304SS tri-metallic couples were investigated using various tests after TIG arc welding. The results showed that the weld seam is susceptible to corrosion. The asymmetric corrosion of the weld seam is attributed to the macro-galvanic effect between the weld seam/AA and the weld seam/SS. The localized corrosion of Zn in delta-FeZn10 resulted in the initiation of corrosion trenches and channels. The deep corrosion propagation at the weld seam/SS interface was caused by local acidity and micro-galvanic effect.

Understanding the interaction between erosion and corrosion of pipeline steel in acid solution of different pH

Yunze Xu et al.

Summary: The interactions between erosion and corrosion of X65 pipeline steel in acid slurry were investigated at different pH levels. Results showed that pH = 3.5 was a critical value for the transition of cathodic reaction under erosion-corrosion. The reduction of Hthorn was the main cathodic reaction at pH < 3.5, leading to scattered small pits. However, at pH >= 3.5, oxygen reduction became the main cathodic reaction, resulting in the formation of erosion-corrosion pits and craters.

Corrosion susceptibility of different planes of AlMgScZr alloy produced by selective laser melting

Y. X. Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion susceptibility of the Top and Side plane of the AlMgScZr alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) through electrochemical tests. The results show that the Top plane exhibits better corrosion resistance due to its better grain distribution and weaker texture relative to the Side plane.

Identification of the critical microstructural parameters on the corrosion behaviour of commercially pure aluminium alloy

A. Ingle et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in the density of high-angle grain boundaries can decrease the corrosion current of commercially pure Al alloy in chloride-sulphate solution, while intermetallic particles may act as pit initiation sites. In addition, the propagation of pits is strongly influenced by the density of high-angle grain boundaries.

Improvement of mechanical properties of tri-metallic 7075Al/1060Al/304 SS composite via collaborative strengthening behavior

Taiqian Mo et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the mechanical behavior of tri-metallic Al/Al/Steel composites, focusing on the effect of strengthening mechanisms introduced by interlaminar and internal microstructures. The results show that the tri-metallic composites exhibit excellent interface bonding and inhibited intermetallic compound formation. The mechanical properties of the tri-metallic composites are significantly improved compared to bi-metallic Al/Steel composites due to the precipitation strengthening behavior of the high-performance 7075Al. Various annealing treatments are conducted to further optimize the strength and ductility of the tri-metallic composites by inducing strengthening mechanisms near the interface.

Electrochemical and localized corrosion behavior of 316 L SS/copper/316 L SS sandwich composite in chloride-containing environment

Huajie Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical and localized corrosion behavior of a 316L SS/copper/316L SS composite in a 0.5 wt. % NaCl solution was investigated using electrochemical measurements and high-resolution microscopic examination. Galvanic coupling accelerated the dissolution at the internal surface and pitting attack at the external surface of the 316L layer. Polarization up to 1 V/SCE resulted in the formation of a corrosion product layer composed of metal oxides/hydroxides on top of the passive film.

Effect of post-brazing heat treatment on the corrosion mechanism of sandwich multi-layered aluminium sheets

Zhipeng Yuan et al.

Summary: Post-brazing heat treatment at 325 degrees C leads to homogenous dispersion of Cu in the re-solidified clad and elimination of Al2Cu particles. Additionally, a large number of alpha-Al(Fe,Mn)Si particles precipitate in the diffusion zone after the treatment, making it slightly more anodic and enhancing its sacrificial protection capability for the core layer.

Review of micro-scale and atomic-scale corrosion mechanisms of second phases in aluminum alloys

Yuan-yuan Ji et al.

Summary: Localized corrosion of aluminum alloys, such as pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, is closely related to micro-galvanic corrosion between the second phase and the Al matrix. Factors affecting the corrosion mechanisms of the second phase in Al alloys at micro and atomic scales were examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and first principles calculations, including the composition and structure of the second phase, pH of the environment, stress, and adsorption behavior of adsorbates (such as CF, H2O, OH, and O-2).

On the corrosion of a high solute Al-Zn-Mg alloy produced by laser powder bed fusion

A. P. Babu et al.

Summary: The research examined an additively manufactured aluminium alloy with high solute content, Al-14Zn-3Mg, which showed lower corrosion rate compared to a conventional wrought alloy, AA7075-T6. This difference was attributed to the microstructure and solute content of Al-14Zn-3Mg, specifically the absence of coarse intermetallic particles. Various tests were conducted to analyze the corrosion behavior of this new alloy manufactured through LPBF.
