Responses of Rice and Related Cadmium Transporter Genes to the Passivating Microbial Agent MBLHAP

Xiaoxi Zeng et al.

Summary: Alkali-producing microorganisms and hydroxyapatite (HAP) effectively reduce the toxicity of Cd to rice by decreasing the available Cd content in the soil and reducing the absorption and accumulation of Cd in rice leaves. A passivating bacterial agent developed specifically for Cd-contaminated soil was used, and changes in Cd concentration, gene expression, and enzyme activities were observed in rice. The results demonstrated significant reductions in Cd content, consistent changes in gene regulation, and the alleviation of Cd stress through enzyme regulation in rice.

Conditional remediation performance of wheat straw biochar on three typical Cd-contaminated soils

Wengang Zuo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of Cd in different soil conditions treated with wheat straw biochar and its driving mechanisms. The addition of biochar facilitated Cd immobilization and reduced Cd uptake by green vegetables in various soils. However, in acidic soil, the release of exchangeable aluminum from biochar led to increased leaching of Cd. The remediation performance of biochar for Cd-contaminated soils is conditional and more effective in neutral and saline-alkali soils.

Lead remediation is promoted by phosphate-solubilizing fungi and apatite via the enhanced production of organic acid

Da Tian et al.

Summary: Lead (Pb) is a common heavy metal pollutant that poses a direct or indirect threat to human health. Apatite can immobilize Pb by forming pyromorphite (Pyro), but its effectiveness depends on the release of phosphorus (P). Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can secrete organic acid to enhance P release from apatite. This research reviews the potential pathway of strengthening Pb immobilization by PSF and apatite, while considering the limitations and promoting the development of these remediation technologies.

Summary: To address environmental pollution caused by dyes and heavy metals, it is crucial to develop adsorbents with efficient adsorption and removal capabilities. In this study, biomimetic apatite hydrogel beads resembling the structure of petunia pollen were created for the effective removal of lead ions (Pb2+) and malachite green (MG) through adsorption. By encapsulating magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (MHNPs) in sodium alginate gels using an ionic cross-linking approach, the resulting hydrogel beads (MHSB) exhibited satisfactory adsorption capacities of 208.06 mg/g for MG and 475.50 mg/g for Pb2+. The magnetic MHNPs and MHSB showed promising potential for adsorbing and removing dyes and heavy metal pollutants due to their strong adsorption capability and stability.

Atomistic mechanism of cadmium incorporation into hydroxyapatite

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the incorporation of Cd into hydroxyapatite (HAp) and its effects on the structure. The results show that Cd incorporation causes a decrease in lattice parameters, a decrease in particle size, and an increase in specific surface area of the synthesized samples. Raman and X-ray absorption spectra indicate distortion of phosphate and preferential occupancy of Cd over Ca2 site. EXAFS analysis reveals that Cd occupies different Ca2 positions depending on its content. This study provides atomistic insight into the mechanism of Cd incorporation in HAp and has implications for the development of effective Cd removal methods.

A high-efficient and recyclable aged nanoscale zero-valent iron compound for V5+ removal from wastewater: Characterization, performance and mechanism

Tingyi Liu et al.

Summary: An effective complex of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) supported on zirconium 1,4-dicarboxybenzene metals-organic frameworks (UIO-66) was synthesized for efficient removal of V5+ from wastewater. The composite demonstrated strong oxidation resistance and a uniform dispersion of NZVI on UIO-66. V5+ could be quickly and completely removed in a wider pH range by the composite, except at pH = 1. The adsorption of V5+ on the composite followed a multi-layer heterogeneous adsorption mechanism, with an adsorbed amount of 397.23 mg V/g NZVI. The presence of nitrate inhibited the removal of V5+ by the composite. The mechanisms of vanadium elimination included physical adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation, with reduction being the dominant mechanism. The composite showed good reusability after acid leaching.
